Plot

Thakur Sunder Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) is the Thakur of a small Estate. He stays in the Haveli with his daughter Sharmila (Tanuja) and brother Madan Singh (Madan Puri). In his past, Sunder Singh had an affair with a village girl. Consequently, the village girl gave birth to a child but Thakur Sunder Singh refused to accept both of them as it would be against his family honour. This past keeps haunting the Thakur and thus he suffers from asthma and heart ailments.

Doctor Shyam treats Sunder Singh. Soon Sharmila falls in love with him. Her uncle Madan Singh is a wicked man and always seeks money from his brother Sunder Singh. When Madan Singh sees Sharmila and Doctor Shyam romancing, he goes to Sunder Singh and informs him about his daughter. In a fit of rage, Thakur quarrels with Sharmila and slaps her. Still she keeps insisting on continuing her relationship with the doctor. At this Thakur gets heart attack and at last she decides to listen to her father.

Few days later, on the occasion of Sharmila’s birthday guests were invited, including Doctor Shyam. A dancing girl (Aruna Irani) was also brought for performing mujra. On not seeing Sharmila the doctor goes to her room. Taking this as a chance to fuel the sour relationship, Madan Singh tells his brother Sunder Singh, who goes after Shyam and thrashes him in presence of the guests and asks him never to come to the Haveli. Sharmila couldn’t bear this and the next morning leaves her father to stay at a hostel. Sunder Singh is very much in grief. Madan Singh adds to his woes by marrying the mujra girl. Sunder Singh again refuses to accept the mujra girl as his sister-in-law and gets another heart attack. Doctor Shyam is called and he asks the Thakur to bring back Sharmila. However, Thakur thought this suggestion to be a trick of Doctor Shyam to get close to Sharmila. Again taking this chance to fulfill his ill-design plot, Madan Singh suggests his elder brother that Doctor Shyam is not trustworthy and that he should be replaced by other doctor. Madan Singh brings in Doctor Lakhan and Nurse Veera (Bela Bose) to attend him.

One rainy night Madan Singh shows up his real intention and asks the elder Thakur to sign another Will. Sunder Singh gets another attack. This time it turns up to be fatal for the Thakur as Madan Singh stops him from taking any medicine. Doctor Lakhan and Nurse Veera too do not help him and Sunder Singh dies. However, Madan Singh calls Shyam telling him that his brother is very serious. After Shyam arrives in the Haveli he was accused of murdering Sunder Singh by giving wrong medicine. Despite his argument that the Thakur died of heart attack police tries to arrest him but he escapes. Then Madan Singh cremates Sunder Singh and sends telegram to Sharmila about her father’s death. When Sharmila comes back, she finds that the Haveli is haunted by her father’s spirit and informs her uncle, who instead declares her as insane. Her uncle even says that she was engaged to a person. One of the old servants of the Haveli gets suspicious and informs the police department which ensures him that truth will be searched.

In the meantime, Sharmila keeps meeting Doctor Shyam and refuses to marry him. She tells him that her late father never approved their relationship and he died. Thus, she can’t marry him. There also she sees the spirit of her father. Few days later, even Madan Singh sees the spirit of the Thakur and insists Sharmila and all others to leave the Haveli. When Sharmila refuses to leave, Madan Singh shot the spirit with a gun who then appears to be a live person and tries to escape. However, soon he was caught and divulges about the plot designed by Madan Singh.

It then comes to fore that the person who had been acting as the spirit is the illegitimate child of the Thakur. After knowing about the truth he had entered the Haveli to take revenge from Sunder Singh. Instead, he witnessed the scene when the Thakur was dying and Madan Singh was stopping him from taking any medicine. Soon he got caught. Madan Singh noticed that his face resembled Sunder Singh’s face and then frightens him by saying that Madan Singh’s goon would kill his mother if he doesn’t act as the spirit and kills Sharmila. However, the Thakur’s illegitimate son tries to save his half sister after his mother awakens his conscience. On the other hand, police discovers that Lakhan was impersonating as a doctor who was actually a wicked person and Veera was a cabaret dancer. In the end, Madan Singh gets arrested.
