Jonnali Mikaela Parmenius (born 9 August 1987), better known by the stage name Noonie Bao, is a Swedish singer, songwriter, and music producer. She has written songs for artists such as Charli XCX, Avicii, Clean Bandit, Alesso and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Early life
Parmenius was born in Stockholm, Sweden.[1] She started singing at early age, inspired by her musical parents, and performed in choir productions as a child.[1] At the age of 12, she began to write her own songs, but at first, she did so in secret because she was embarrassed and uncomfortable singing about feelings.[2] She attended a music school, where she was called a "black sheep". At the age of 15, a friend gave her the nickname Noonie Bao because of her appearance.[1][3]
She briefly attended the Royal College of Music, Stockholm,[1] but left and went to live with a friend in St. Gallen, Switzerland.[4][5][6] She began to take a singing class and recorded her own songs in a friend's attic, which was her first contact with song production.[5] Later, she worked in a recording studio in Paris.[4]
Career
After two years, Noonie Bao returned to Stockholm, where she signed a contract with the label EMI as a songwriter.[4][7] Furthermore, she founded a music label called 2many Freckles.[8] Under this label, she wrote and produced songs for Adiam Dymott, Clean Bandit, Frederic Sioen, and Tove Styrke.[9][10] Nooonie Bao produced several songs on Tove Styrke's 2010 self-titled album, which spent 35 weeks on the Swedish charts and reached number 10.[11] In 2011, the Belgian band Das Pop became aware of a song by Noonie Bao and recruited her to sing backing vocals on the song "Fair Weather Friends" on their album The Game.[12][13] She went on tour with the band in Belgium and Europe.[12] The album stayed on the charts for 25 weeks and reached number 13.[14]
On 27 January 2012, she released her debut single "About to Tell".[15] On 31 October, she released her debut album I Am Noonie Bao. The album incorporates indie pop and folk musical styles.[3][9] In Autumn and Winter of 2012, she went on tour in Sweden.[16]
In 2013 she was nominated for a Grammis award in the category Best New Artist, but was defeated by Icona Pop.[17]
Noonie Bao had her greatest success as a guest musician for the song "I Could Be the One" by Avicii and Nicky Romero. She was involved with this song as songwriter and singer.[18] The track reached the charts in four countries. On 17 February 2013, it reached number one on the charts in the UK for one week.
In 2014, Noonie Bao co-wrote the single "Doing It" from Charli XCX's album Sucker, which reached number eight on the UK singles chart.,[19] as well as contributing to three other album tracks. The two have continued to work together since, including the majority of XCX's 2016 Vroom Vroom EP. XCX has called Bao her "best friend and favorite collaborator."[20]
In 2015, she released the single "I'm in Love" on Soundcloud and YouTube. On 13 November, she released her first extended play Noonia, which showed a transition into more pop-based production than the music that had appeared on her debut album.
Continuing with the sound of Noonia, Bao released the Burns-produced single "Reminds Me" in April 2016
