NextEra Energy Resources is a wholesale electricity supplier based in Juno Beach, Florida. It is a subsidiary of NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE), a Fortune 200 company. Prior to 2009, NextEra Energy Resources (NER) was known as FPL Energy.[1]

NER is North America's largest owner and operator of wind and solar electricity generating assets. The company has 85 wind facilities in seventeen US states and three Canadian provinces. NER also co-owns and operates Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS), the world's largest solar power generating facility.

In addition to wind and solar, NextEra Energy Resources owns and operates generating plants powered by natural gas, nuclear fuel, and oil. The combined capacity of NER's facilities is 18.9 gigawatts (GW).[2]

Natural gas

NextEra Energy owns or co-owns 13 natural gas-fired power plants in 10 US States. The largest of these plants are the 1,792 MW Forney Energy Center in Forney, Texas, the 1,000 MW Lamar Energy Center in Paris, Texas, and the 668 MW Calhoun Energy Center in Eastaboga, Alabama.[3]

Wind power

NextEra Energy is currently the largest owner and operator of wind turbines in the US, and second in the world after Iberdrola. As of January 1, 2015 NextEra Energy, through its subsidiaries, currently operates over 100 wind farms across 19 states and three Canadian provinces, with a gross capacity of 11,300 megawatts.[4] It owns and operates the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center in Taylor County, Texas, the second largest wind farm in the United States.[5] In 2015, NextEra accounted for roughly 35 percent US wind power installed.[6] Google Energy is an investor and customer of NextEra, having invested $38.8 million in two sites in North Dakota, and entered into a purchase agreement for 100 MW at a fixed rate for 20 years.[7][8][9]

Notable NextEra Wind Farms:

Nuclear power

NextEra is also majority owner and operator of the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant. On January 27, 2006, FPL Energy closed the sale transaction of 70% ownership in Duane Arnold Energy Center, located in Iowa . On October 1, 2007, FPL completed a purchase of the Point Beach Plant north of Two Rivers, Wisconsin from Milwaukee-based WE Energies for $924 million.[10]

Solar power

NextEra Energy is a co-owner of the SEGS solar power plants, the largest solar array in the world.[11][12]

Hydropower

NextEra operates multiple hydroelectric power facilities in Maine. Their six facilities on the Kennebec River include the Wyman Dam, Long Falls Dam at Flagstaff Lake, Harris Station Dam, and the Weston South Channel Dam.[13] Their facilities on the Saco River include the Bonny Eagle Dam and the Skelton Dam.[14]

Lawsuits

NextEra has launched a copyright infringement lawsuit against a wind turbine protester who, on her personal website, created a parody of the NextEra logo and referred to the corporation as Nexterror. The corporation's lawyers claim that she “advertised her services in association with a trademark that was confusing with the Plaintiff’s registered trademarks”, potentially causing confusion among NextEra’s customers. As in, wind turbine customers might think that the woman is really NextEra and that they might try to buy wind turbines from her. [15]
