The Newark Fire Department provides fire protection and first responder emergency medical services to the city of Newark, New Jersey.[2]

Organization

The Newark Fire Department is the largest municipal fire department in the state of New Jersey. The department is organized into 13 Divisions: Administration, Community Relations, M.I.S. (Technology), Emergency Management, Fire Prevention and Life Safety, Fire Signal System Operation (Communications), Firefighting, Investigations, Photography and Media Liaison, Special Operations and Hazardous Materials Response, Apparatus, Mask Repair, Special Services, and Training.[3]

The office of the Fire Director and Chief of Department, the Administration Division, the Emergency Management Division, the Fire Prevention and Life Safety Division, and the Investigations and Photography and Media Liaison Divisions are located at Fire Headquarters, 1010 18th Ave.

The Community Relations Division is located at the quarters of Engine Co. 10, Ladder Co. 5, and Rescue Co. 1 at 360 Clinton Ave.

The Special Operations and Hazardous Materials Response Division, as well as the Training Division are located at 191 Orange St. Special Operations and Haz-Mat. Units, such as the Haz-Mat. Support Unit, the Haz-Mat. Mobile Lab, the Mobile Command Unit, the Dive Team Unit, the Quick Attack Foam Unit, the Collapse Rescue Shoring Unit, the Mobile Ambulance Bus, the Mask Service (Air Cascade) Unit, as well as additional support and spare apparatus are all housed at the Special Operations and Training Facility.

The M.I.S. and Communications Division is located at a joint Emergency Dispatch facility with the Newark Police Department, located at 311 Washington St.

The Apparatus Division, as well as the Mask Repair Division, are located at the city of Newark's Motors Division at 233 Wilson Ave.

The Newark Fire Department's Special Services Division, which includes the Fire Alarm Line and Supply Divisions, is located at 56 Prospect St., the former quarters of Engine Co. 5.

Operations

As a part of the Firefighting Division, the Newark Fire Department currently operates 16 Engine Companies, 8 Ladder Companies, and 2 Rescue Companies out of 16 Firehouses, located throughout the city. These 16 Firehouses are organized into 3 Battalions, each commanded by a Battalion Chief per shift. There is also an Safety Battalion and a Special Operations Battalion which are staffed by Battalion Chiefs per shift. A Deputy Chief, known as a Tour Commander, commands all of the Battalion Chiefs per shift.

The department is part of the Metro USAR Strike Team, which consists of nine northern New Jersey fire departments and other emergency services divisions working to address major emergency rescue situations.[4]
