Sam Kelly (born 21 August 1992) is a singer and songwriter from Norfolk. Kelly started learning to play the guitar when he was 8 years old.[2]

Kelly auditioned for Britain's Got Talent in Manchester on 20 January 2012 and was aired on 24 March 2012. His performance of "Make You Feel My Love", originally by Bob Dylan, but covered more recently by Adele, received a standing ovation and praise from all four judges.[3] Simon Cowell was "blown away" by the performance.[4] Later on that day, Cowell tweeted "First day of auditions, think we found a star, but won't give it away. David Walliams is insane!". He received three yes votes from the judges and made it to the next round, and the semi-finals.

In the live semi-final on 9 May 2012, Kelly performed Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. David Walliams said: "Really interesting judging on this show, because some acts come on and they’ve got fireworks and flashing lights and it doesn’t make as much impact as one guy standing still on a stage singing and playing the guitar. That was astonishing. You have a real recording artist’s voice." Alesha Dixon said: "Sam, I loved you the first time, and you haven’t disappointed again. There’s a lovely sensitivity in the way that you sing. I think girls are just going to fall in love with you. David is so spot on. No smoke and mirrors."

Amanda Holden said: "You have the most soulful quality to your voice, and you really sing from your heart. You make me want to listen to what you’re singing about. If you went through to the final, I’d like you to kick it up a bit."

Simon Cowell concluded: "I totally disagree with Amanda, this is exactly what you should be doing. I heard something distinct in your vocal that I didn’t hear first time. You’ve got charisma."

Kelly received the most votes out of all the acts in the semi-final with 26.8% of the vote, sending him through to the final. In the final on 12 May, Kelly performed 'Bless the Broken Road'. David Walliams said: "Sam I think that was your best performance ever, with a song that most people don’t know you had us in the palm of your hands. Really terrific, I think you’ll do well tonight." Alesha Dixon said: "That was gorgeous, your vocal was so smooth and you have a commercial appeal. I loved the emotional connection to it too, which was slightly lacking before." Amanda Holden said "I thought that was much more rocky. You were sensational and there are a lot of singers who only care about how they sound but I could see tonight that you really sang with heart and soul and passion." Simon Cowell concluded with "I was thinking as you were doing that, any other show we’ve done you would walk it. I loved the choice of song, I know you considered something a bit more obvious and I think this is by far your best performance so far in the competition."

Kelly finished in ninth place with 1% of the vote. Kelly's debut EP entitled 'Your Way Home' was released in March 2013, featuring Beth Porter (Eliza Carthy Band) on cello. This resulted in Kelly gaining him support slots with the likes of Cara Dillon, Jim Moray and Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman, as well as numerous folk clubs around the country. Kelly was also selected for the first ever EFDSS Artist Development scheme.[5]
