Mohamed Zairi is a British academic and researcher in the field of Total Quality Management (TQM).[1]

Biography

Zairi was born in Algeria in 1956 but has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years. After postgraduate studies at North Staffordshire Polytechnic,[2] he accepted a teaching appointment at the School of Management, University of Bradford, where he is currently professor emeritus.[3] He was appointed to the Sabic Chair in Best Practice Management[4] in 1995, which he held until 2004. He was subsequently selected for the Juran Chair, which is funded by the Government of Dubai in the form of a Consortium.[5] He is also the Executive Chairman of European Centre for Best Practice Management based in Bradford, England. He is founder and chair of the Zairi Institute, an organisation designed to disseminate the Best Management philosophy and techniques more widely.[6][7]

Zairi's field of expertise involves benchmarking and Best Practice Management. He advocates bridging the gap between theory and practice, adapting academic standards or good management techniques to real-world situations. He has helped businesses, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations around the world to improve the quality of the goods and services that they provide.[8]

Zairi has authored or co-authored over 300 publications, including 17 books in the fields of quality and related topics.[9] He has also actively participated in well over 250 conferences nationally and internationally. Since the mid-1980s Zairi has been active in supporting organisations in the UK adopt Best Practice Management thinking. He has worked very closely with hundreds of organisations covering a wide spectrum of public and private sector interests. His work in the 1980s in the field of Advanced Manufacturing Technology helped pave the way for SMEs in particular to contemplate the introduction of sophisticated technological systems without having to encounter the types of difficulties and problems faced by large organisations.[10][11][12]

Beginning in the early 1990s, Zairi helped promote the use of benchmarking in the UK. He chaired and gave hundreds of presentations and keynote addresses for senior management teams working in the public and private sectors. His first book on benchmarking was published in 1992.[11] This formed the basis for training thousands of managers in both the public and private sector in the use of benchmarking tools. He helped set up the European Best Practice Benchmarking Award in 1994–95 for which he serves as chairman.[13][14] He has received several international awards and citations for his efforts.[15][16][17][18][19][20]
