Mike Glennon

Michael Joseph Glennon (born December 12, 1989) is an American football quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Buccaneers in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played college football at NC State.

Early years

Glennon attended Westfield High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, and played for the Westfield Bulldogs high school football and basketball teams. As senior, he completed 171 of 265 passes for 2,557 yards and 32 touchdowns. Glennon led his team to an undefeated 15–0 record and the Virginia Division 6 AAA State championship title when the Bulldogs defeated the Woodbridge Vikings 42–14. He was the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year and was a Parade magazine high school All-American.^[1] He was rated the third best quarterback recruit in the nation by Rivals.com in 2008.^[2]

College career

Glennon enrolled in North Carolina State University, where he played for the NC State Wolfpack football team from 2008 to 2012. In 2008, he was redshirted. In 2009 and 2010, he was the backup to starting quarterback Russell Wilson. During that time he completed 33 of 52 passes for 326 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. As a junior in 2011, he took over as the starter.^[3] For the 2011 season, he completed 283 of 453 passes for 3,054 yards with 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In 2012, he completed 330 of 564 passes for 4,031 yards with 31 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.^[4]

Professional career

2013: Rookie year

On April 26, 2013, Glennon was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round (73rd overall pick) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He was the third quarterback taken in the draft behind E. J. Manuel and Geno Smith. On June 12, 2013, Glennon signed a four-year contract with the Buccaneers worth $3,104,063, with a $637,500 signing bonus.^[6]

On September 25, 2013, it was announced Glennon would start in Week 4 over Josh Freeman, after an 0–3 start to the season for the Bucs. Glennon's first career start began well, as he threw his first career touchdown to wide receiver Mike Williams, and led the Bucs to a 10–0 lead through three quarters. Despite the strong start, things would go bad quickly for Glennon. With a 10–3 lead and 3:18 left in the game, Glennon was intercepted by Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson on his own 24 yard line. The Cardinals quickly scored 6 seconds later to tie the game at 10–10. After a quick 3 and out by the Bucs, the Cardinals kicked a field goal to take a 13–10 lead, with 1:29 left in the game. With 40 seconds left in the game, Glennon, who was trying to lead a quick fourth-quarter comeback, was once again intercepted by Peterson, giving him a loss in his first career start, and dropping the Bucs to 0–4.

After a bye week, Glennon looked better in the Bucs next game vs the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 26 of 43 passes for 273 yards, 2 touchdowns, and only 1 interception. However, the Bucs lost to the Eagles 31–20, dropping them to 0–2 under Glennon and 0–5 on the season.

Glennon would continue to improve his play Week 7 vs the Atlanta Falcons, completing 26 of 44 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns, and did not throw an interception for the first time in his career. However despite another strong showing from Glennon, the Bucs lost, 31–23 to the Falcons, and dropped to 0–6 overall on the season and 0–3 under Glennon.

In his next start, Glennon had his first career Thursday Night Football game in a Week 8 matchup vs the division rival Carolina Panthers. Glennon completed 30 of 51 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown but remained winless in his NFL career as the Bucs tied for the worst record in the league, at 0–7.

Glennon and the Bucs were massive underdogs coming into their next game, as they were playing the 7–1 Seattle Seahawks, who were at the time undefeated at home. Despite the odds, the Bucs jumped out to a 21–0 lead in the second quarter, led by two touchdown passes by Glennon. Holding a 24–7 lead late in the third quarter, Glennon and the Bucs looked well on their way to their first win of the 2013 season. However, the Seahawks mounted a 20-point comeback, capped off by a game-winning field goal in overtime.

With the loss to the Seahawks, the Bucs fell to 0–8, leaving them winless through the first half of their season. Glennon would get another taste of primetime football in Week 10, as the Bucs took on the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football. Much like the previous week, the Bucs held a big first half lead, leading 15–0 late in the 2nd Quarter. However, the Bucs would once again blow their lead, and trailed 19–15 into the 4th quarter. The Bucs refused to lose, as Glennon lead a late 4th quarter drive, capped off by a touchdown run by backup running back Bobby Rainey. The Bucs would hold on to win their first game of the season 22–19, giving Glennon his first win as an NFL starter.

The Bucs would continue their momentum into their rematch with the Atlanta Falcons. Glennon would have a fantastic performance, completing over 80% of his passes for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bucs would dominate the Falcons 41–28, as Glennon lead them to their second straight win after starting the year 0–8. The Bucs moved on to play the Detroit Lions following their dominant win over the Falcons. Glennon would complete 14 out of 21 passes, including a 138.4 passer rating. Glennon would also set a rookie record by having a touchdown in each of his first 8 starts to start a career. The Bucs would go on to beat Detroit 24–21 for their third consecutive win.

Glennon and the Bucs would be back to reality in their Week 13 rematch vs the Panthers, who had won 7 straight coming into the game. Glennon would perform unimpressively, completing 14 of 21 passes for 180 yards and an interception. Glennon would also not throw a touchdown for the first game of his career, as the Bucs were defeated by the Panthers by a score of 27–6, dropping them to a 3–9 record.

After the defeat by the Panthers, Glennon and the Bucs played the 4–8 Buffalo Bills. Despite being a game between two sub .500 teams, it drew some interest as the battle between the two best rookie quarterbacks in the league, Glennon and the Bills E. J. Manuel. Glennon had a mediocre game vs the Bills, completing 9 of 25 passes for 90 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. However Manuel played even worse, throwing 4 interceptions. Despite that, the Bucs were led by a great performance from running back Bobby Rainey, and defeated the Bills 27–6, giving them 4 wins in their last 5 games and putting them at 4–9 on the season.

Glennon would look to rebound from his career worst performance going into a tough match-up with the defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers, who were looking to move closer to securing a return to the playoffs. Glennon would put out a better performance than the previous week, completing 18 of 34 passes for 179 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception. It would not however be enough to result in a victory, as the Bucs fell to the 49ers, 33–14, and dropped to a lowly 4–10 record on the season.

Glennon and the Bucs finished their 2013 campaign with road games against the St. Louis Rams and the divisional rival New Orleans Saints. In their match-up with the Rams, Glennon completed 16 of 26 passes for 158 yards without throwing a touchdown or an interception. It was the first time in his career Glennon hadn't thrown a touchdown or interception. The Bucs would taste defeat against the Rams 23–13, and fall to a dreadful 4–11 on the season. The last game of their forgetful campaign meant nothing to the Bucs, but everything to the Saints, as they needed a win to secure a playoff spot. Glennon wrapped up his rookie season completing 22 of 41 passes for 219 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception in a 42–17 blowout loss.

The Bucs finished their season 4–12, 4–9 with Glennon at quarterback. Glennon finished his rookie campaign with an 83.9 passer rating, completing 59.4 percent of his passes (247 of 416) for 2,608 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Glennon was named to the Pro Football Writer's Association's All-Rookie Team for his strong first year performance.

2014 season

New head coach Lovie Smith was quick to announce that newly signed journeyman Josh McCown would be the starting quarterback for the upcoming 2014 season, leaving Glennon's future in Tampa Bay in question. On May 10, Smith stated while McCown would be the starter, Glennon is the Bucs' "quarterback of the future". Two days later on May 12, it was reported that the Bucs turned down at least six trade offers for Glennon during the 2014 NFL Draft.

Glennon made his 2014 season debut Week 3 on Thursday Night Football against the Atlanta Falcons. Glennon entered the game near the end of the first half, after McCown suffered a thumb injury. At the time of Glennon's entry into the game, the Bucs already trailed 35–0. Glennon performed well, completing 17 of 24 passes for 121 yards, 1 touchdown, and no interceptions. However, the Bucs were beaten by a humongous deficit of 56–14.

Despite Glennon's strong performance, Lovie Smith announced that McCown would remain the starter for Week 4. However it would be announced later in the week that McCown would be unable to play due to his injury, making Glennon the starter for Week 4.

Glennon made his first start of the 2014 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With 40 seconds left in the game, Glennon drove the Bucs down the field for a game-winning touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson with seven seconds left. Glennon played what was arguably his best game of the season, completing 21 of 42 passes for 302 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception, leading the Bucs to a 27–24 victory over the Steelers, their first win of the season.

Glennon would make his second consecutive start Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints. Glennon lead the Bucs to a 2nd half comeback, as the Bucs lead 31–20 with 13:28 to play after trailing 13–10 at half time. However, the Saints would score 11 unanswered points, which included Glennon being sacked in the endzone by Junior Galette for a safety, and a game tying field goal by Shayne Graham to tie the game 31–31 and send it into overtime. The Saints won the coin toss and capped off their first drive with an 18 yard touchdown run by Khiry Robinson, handing the Bucs a heartbreaking 37–31 loss. Despite the defeat, Glennon again played well completing 19 of 32 passes for 249 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.

After the tough loss to the Saints, Glennon and the Bucs returned home for a Week 6 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. The game was over before it started, as Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco threw for 5 touchdowns in the first half, putting the Bucs in a 38–0 hole at halftime. While the Bucs did play better in the 2nd half, out scoring the Ravens 17–10, it was not enough to keep another blowout from happening, as the Bucs lost by a score of 48–17. Despite the dominating loss, Glennon had another good performance, completing 24 of 44 passes for 314 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.

After a bye week, Glennon and the Bucs hosted a Week 8 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The Bucs failed to muster any offense throughout most of the game, as they trailed 10–0 entering the 4th quarter. However, Glennon would lead the Bucs down the field for two field goals, capped off with Glennon throwing a 7 yard touchdown pass to tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to give the Bucs a 13–10 lead with just 2:02 left to play. That would not be enough to sink the Vikings however, as Blair Walsh would drill a 38 yard field goal as time expired to send the game into overtime. On the first play of overtime, Glennon threw a short pass to Seferian-Jenkins which would have given the Bucs a gain of 10 and a first down. However, Seferian-Jenkins would be stripped by Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr, who would return the ball 27 yards for a touchdown, giving the Vikings a shocking 19–13 win over the Bucs. Glennon would have a subpar game, completing 19 of 28 passes for 171 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Glennon and the Bucs would then go back on the road for a Week 9 matchup with the Cleveland Browns. The Bucs would enter the 4th quarter with a 17–16 lead over the Browns, but would give up a touchdown with 9:00 remaining, putting them down 22–17 after the Browns missed the 2 point conversion. Glennon and the Bucs were unable to muster a response, handing them a 22–17 loss, their 4th straight. Glennon once again had a mediocre performance, completing 17 of 33 passes for 260 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

After Glennon was only able to lead the team to a single win in 5 starts, Lovie Smith announced that McCown would reclaim the starting quarterback job for Week 10.

The Bucs finished the season a league worst 2–14, and 1–4 with Glennon as the quarterback. Glennon finished his short second season campaign with a 83.3 passer rating, completing 57.6 percent of his passes (117 of 203) for 1,417 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

2015 season

Glennon did not see any playing time during the 2015 season. He was the backup to the number one overall pick Jameis Winston.

Personal

Mike Glennon has an older brother and sister, Sean and Katie. Glennon's brother, Sean Glennon, was a quarterback for the Virginia Tech Hokies from 2004 to 2008.^[8][9] Glennon completed his academic tenure at NC State with two degrees: a Bachelor's degree in Business Management and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, graduating on December 14, 2012. His GPA in the MALS program, which had an emphasis in leadership and sports management, was in the 3.8 range on a 4.0 scale. The curriculum included classes in financial management of corporations and investments and portfolio management.^[10]
