Michael Tobin OBE (born 16 January 1964) is an English industry entrepreneur, businessman, author and philanthropist. He was CEO of FTSE 250 data centre operator Telecity Group. In 2014 he was awarded an OBE for his ‘services to the Digital Economy' in The Queen's Birthday Honours List.[1]
Career
Business career
Following roles at Rockwell Corp, Goupil, ICL and Fujitsu[2] Tobin joined Redbus as Sales and Marketing Director. Becoming CEO in 2003, he led the merger between competitors Redbus and Telecity. In 2006 Tobin became CEO of the newly formed TelecityGroup. In 2014 he was fired from TelecityGroup following reported tensions with the board of directors.[3][4]
Non-executive Directorships and Board roles
Tobin holds many non executive roles internationally which include: Satellite Solutions Worldwide Plc (Europasat),[5] Ultrahaptics, Teraco Data Environments, Datapipe, ITconic SA, Instrumental,[6] Chayora, EURO-DIESEL, Basefarm and TeamRock.[7]
Charitable Activities
Tobin has been recognised as a 'Third Sector Business Charity Champion' for his fundraising work with many charities, these include: The Prince’s Trust, Action for Children, The British Asian Trust, Make-a-Wish Foundation and Friends of the Loomba Trust.[8][9]
He started the CEO Sleepout UK charitable initiative in 2014 with Tony Hawkhead, CEO of Action for Children,[10] where CEOs sleep out on the street to raise the profile of the issue of homelessness for children.[11] He is also a supporter of Byte Night, another sleepout initiative that also raises funds for Action for Children.[12]
In 2016, Tobin raised £92,000 for running 40 marathons in 40 days for The Prince’s Trust.[13][14]

Awards
- In 2014 Michael Tobin was recognised with an Order of the British Empire for his ‘services to the Digital Economy’ which was presented to him at an investiture ceremony by HRH The Prince of Wales.[16]

- Datacentre Leaders’ Awards September 2009 Business Person of the Year Award London Chamber of Commerce & Industry 2009 and 2010[20]
- 2011 Stevie Awards honoree in Executive of the Year - Computer Software category.[21]
- Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to the Data Centre Industry - Data Centre Europe Awards 2011.[22]
