Maximilian Paul Diarmuid "Max" Irons (born 17 October 1985)[1][2] is an English-Irish film actor and model.[3] He is known for his roles in The Riot Club (2014), Red Riding Hood (2011), The White Queen (2013), and The Host (2013).[4] He is the son of actors Jeremy Irons and Sinéad Cusack.

Early life

Irons was born in Camden, London,[5] to Irish actress Sinéad Cusack and English actor Jeremy Irons.[6] He is a grandson of actors Cyril Cusack and Maureen Cusack.[7][8] His brother is photographer Samuel Irons, and his maternal half-brother is the Irish politician Richard Boyd Barrett.

He attended the Dragon School in Oxford,[9] then Bryanston School in Dorset (from which he was expelled shortly after receiving the under 14 high jump silver medal),[10] and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2008.[11] Irons suffered from dyslexia through his school years and his father discouraged him from going into an acting career.[12] While first starting off in acting, Irons worked as a barman.[13]

Career

Acting

In 2011, Irons played the role of Henry in Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood, with co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman.[6] Max was chosen to play Jared Howe in the 2013 film adaptation of The Host, based on Stephenie Meyer's novel of the same name alongside Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger and Jake Abel.[14]

In the 2013 television series The White Queen, Irons took the lead role of Edward IV of England.[15] The series, based on Philippa Gregory's bestselling historical novel series The Cousins' War, was broadcast weekly on BBC One, ending on 18 August 2013.[16] Irons appeared in 2014 film The Riot Club, the film adaptation of Posh.[17] In 2016, he starred in the ITV miniseries Tutankhamun as Howard Carter.

Modelling

Irons has modelled for companies including Burberry and Mango.[18] As of 2012, he was on a modelling contract for Macy's I.N.C. collection for Fall/Winter 2012 as reported on 15 August 2012 by The Huffington Post.[19] In 2015, he was named one of GQ's 50 best-dressed British men.[20]
