Loyola High School, Karimnagar

Loyola High School, Karimnagar, India, was opened by the Society of Jesus in 1980 as a Telugu-medium school. It is currently a part of their educational complex on Rekurthi Rd.^[1] and includes also English-medium classes.

History

A thirty-acre campus on the outskirts of Karimnagar at Rekurthi village houses the Loyola complex – a Telugu and English medium high school, a junior college, and a B.Ed and D.Ed college.

The 1991 census has the literacy rate of Karimnagar District at 21.5% (5.51% for women and 15.99% for men). In the 1970s the Jesuits ran a hostel in their parish compound in Karimnagar for the students of St. John’s, Church of South India, and Government schools. Loyola High School was started in June 1980 with 6th, 7th, and 8th standards in the parish compound. An additional section of each class was opened the following academic year.

In 1978, at the invitation of Bishop Alphonso Beretta of Warangal, Sri K S. Sharma,^[2] Magistrate of Karimnagar and graduate of the Jesuits' Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada, had allotted 30 acres of land in Rekurthi village, acquired through the Land Ceiling Act. To raise funds for building, Fr. J. Kuriakose, S.J., Principal of Loyola College, Madras, secured the services of classical musician M. S. Subbulakshmi who performed before 10,000 people. From these funds the school building was completed in 1985.

In 1987 the Jesuits and hostel students were also accommodated at Rekurthi. An auditorium to accommodate about 700 people was put up in 1990. In 1993 the school obtained government grant-in-aid. In 1993 Loyola Junior College was founded as a co-educational institution.^[3]
