List of active coal fired power stations in the United Kingdom

There are currently 9 active coal fired power stations operating in the United Kingdom which have a total generating capacity of 14.4GW. By the end of 2016 more of these plants are due to close. In November 2015 it was announced by the UK Government that all coal fired power stations would be closed by 2025.[1]

The use of coal power fell by a fifth in 2014 to historic lows not seen since before the Industrial Revolution. Coal supplied 17% of UK electricity in the third quarter of 2015 down from 21% in 2014 and 34% in the third quarter of 2013.[2] In May 2016, for the first time solar power produced more electricity than coal, producing 1.33GWh compared to 0.9GWh from coal.[3]
