In the late 1960s, four families live in three houses along a narrow bustling street on North Bridge Road. Lin Xiaobei is the only son of a tailor. He fights and gets himself into countless trouble, and is a constant annoyance to his neighbours. Yao Jianhong, who grows up with Xiaobei, is the only person who could tame him. From young, Jianhong and her father perform martial arts in the streets to sell medicated ointment. She is in the ‘turf' for years, and is a candid and forthright girl with a sense of chivalry. Besides Xiaobei and Jianhong, their other childhood friends include Huang Zhihao (nicknamed Tarzan), who loves to day-dream; Tarzan's younger sister Huang Jinhao, who cares about her looks more than anything; the sickly but intelligent Qin Huimin; and the timid Yao Wuji...

Xiaobei loves novelty. One day, he takes Huimin and Jinhao to the Shui Xian Men shopping area to show off his findings – fake eyelashes – the latest product from England. Jinhao becomes obsessed and she spends $4 on renting a pair. Jianhong's father Yao Shi is a habitual gambler. He organises a gambling session and mama-san Lucy joins in. Halfway through the game, Lucy sneaks into the room next door to fool around with Hui Min's father, “Uncle Handsome” Qin Xianglin. One of the gamblers tries to get fresh with Jianhong, so Jianhong teaches him a lesson.

Tarzan is obsessed with car-racing, yet he cannot drive as he failed the Highway Code test eight times. He vows to pass his ninth attempt, and he asks Jianhong, whom he likes, for a movie date after he pass. Egg prices plummet drastically, so He Jiao, a miser, eats eggs for every meal. Being extremely suspicious by nature, He Jiao thinks Jianhong stole two eggs from her and she confronts Jianhong. Jinhao puts on her fake eyelashes, but no one notices any difference in her. When Jinhao drops one of the eyelashes and Jianhong steps on it by accident, Jinhao demands that Jianhong compensates her. Jianhong refuses.

Tarzan is taking his theory test for the ninth time. Xiaobei tries to help by dressing Tarzan up to look like someone important, but Tarzan fails again. He locks himself in his room in shame, and Jinhao is shocked. Jianhong performs some beautiful sword moves to help Yao Shi sell medicated ointment. Big Black Mole shows up, and he threatens Jianhong to go on a movie date with him, or he will stir trouble.

Xiaobei reads the newspapers while selling clothes at a night market. Inspired by what he reads, Xiaobei dreams of travelling around the world by plane someday. Jinhao pesters Xiaobei into buying her some underwear. Jianhong and Wuji arrive, and Jianhong confronts Jinhao for taking $10 from the comic book stall. Jinhao claims it is compensation for her fake eyelashes and the ladies fight. Xiaobei promises to help Jinhao repay Jianhong, so Jinhao is elated. Jinhao spites Jianhong with the gift from Xiaobei. Jianhong gets angry with Xiaobei, so she leaves. Jinhao insults Wuji for complaining to Jianhong.

While brewing medicine in the kitchen, Lin Yi asks Huimin to help him with a letter in English. It turns out to be a notification for Xiaobei to report for national service. As Xiaobei is Lin Yi's only son, Lin Yi gets worried. Distracted, Lin Yi causes a fire. Jianhong, Tarzan and Xiaobei put the fire out. Landlord couple He Jiao and Huang Lifa have long wanted to get rid of these tenants so they can sell their house. They use this as an excuse to demand compensation from Lin Yi or move out. As Xiaobei scorches his arm, Jianhong gives Xiaobei some medical pills that Yao Shi kept as treasure. Yao Shi feels heartache.

Huimin faints from low blood pressure, so her mother Liu Maomao rushes out to buy her some pig's liver soup. Xianglin seizes the chance to search where Maomao hides her money. He complains to Huimin that Maomao holds the purse strings so tightly that he has no money for vanishing cream or hair wax, so Huimin shows him the ladies' earrings she found on the bed. Xianglin cowers out. Xianglin calls out for Lucy in his sleep, so Maomao hits him.

Maomao and Lucy fights. One a former female gangster nicknamed “Scarlet Butterfly”, and another, a shrew from working many years as a lady of pleasure, both of them end up being injured. When everyone is watching the fight, Xiaobei and Tarzan steal some sodas and eggs from the coffee shop, with the intention of selling them at a grand car-racing event. Jianhong discovers, so Xiaobei drags her along. While Tarzan watches the race enthusiastically, Xiaobei and Jianhong busy themselves selling the items. Big Black Mole discovers it was Xiaobei and Tarzan who attacked him, so he followed them to the race. The three youngsters manage to thwart his advances with wit.

Because of Big Black Mole, Xiaobei makes a loss on the ‘venture', and Tarzan gets a beating from Lifa. Jianhong wants to help Tarzan with her savings, but discovers Yao Shi gambled it away. As Xianglin is afraid Maomao will pursue his affair with Lucy, he pretends to have a brain concussion. Maomao is so worried she seeks help from the temples. Huimin confronts her father, yet Xianglin blames Maomao.

Wuji agrees to help Jinhao clean a chamber pot. When Yao Shi discovers, he punishes Wuji to half-squat outside his room. Jinhao lures Xiaobei to her room, and Xiaobei gets a shock when Jinhao changes into a sexy negligee. Jinhao explains she wishes to enter a “Queen of Beds” contest, so she needs Xiaobei to take some photographs of her for the entry. Xiaobei eventually agrees. As He Jiao returns unexpectedly, Jinhao hides Xiaobei. When Jinhao finds a chance to let Xiaobei escape, Wuji misunderstands their relationship.

The young policeman is De Hua, Jian Hong's cousin. De Hua gives “Big Black Mole” a warning, but on seeing Xiao Bei is holding a rock, he wants to search Xiao Bei as well. Xiao Bei retaliates, so Jian Hong helps explain. Xiao Bei gets jealous on seeing Jian Hong and De Hua seem close. He uses some harsh words on Jian Hong, so Jian Hong steps on his feet as revenge.

Wu Ji misunderstands Xiao Bei took advantage of Jin Hao, so he tries to hit Xiao Bei with the new strokes he learnt. Xiao Bei gives in to Wu Ji, but retaliates when Wu Ji shows no sign of stopping. Later when Wu Ji discovers why Xiao Bei was in Jin Hao's room, the two young men reconcile.

He Jiao eavesdrops on Mao Mao and family, but Mao Mao discovers and the two women quarrel. Mao Mao knows He Jiao is trying to evict her tenants, so she tells He Jiao she can drop the idea. That night, Wu Ji awakes from a nightmare about serving the national service, but he gets a bigger shock when he spots a dark shadow on his way to the toilet. Believing the old building is haunted, Jin Hao is afraid to go to the toilet alone. She asks Xiao Bei to accompany her, and she kisses him as gratitude.

Hui Min has always been sickly, so getting to school each morning becomes a chore. Xiao Bei decides to takes her to school on his bicycle, but her school friends teases Hui Min by saying Xiao Bei is her boyfriend. Hui Min is embarrassed, so Xiao Bei claims Hui Min is his younger sister.

Xiao Bei and Tarzan shove some bananas into the exhaust pipe of De Hua's motorcycle, so De Hua is embarrassed when it wouldn't start. Xiao Bei and Tarzan are secretly pleased, yet Yao Shi discovers their trick. Yao Shi removes the blockage so De Hua can leave with Jian Hong, and he lectures Xiao Bei and Tarzan for not playing fair.

Xiao Bei keeps imagining that Jian Hong and De Hua must be getting intimate. He bumps into a crippled man with a paper bag, and he later discovers the bag behind an altar. On realising the bag contains a batch of gold items, Xiao Bei puts it back. Just then, some detectives show up and question Xiao Bei if he knows where the crippled man is. Xiao Bei denies. On returning to the tailor shop, Xiao Bei decides to retrieve and keep the bag of gold. He returns for the paper bag, but Jian Hong followed him there and stops him. When the crippled man returns for the bag, he gets shot to death by ambushing police. Xiao Bei is glad he listened to Jian Hong's advice.

Jian Hong tells Xiao Bei she went out with De Hua to visit her sick aunt, so Xiao Bei rests his mind. Yao Shi is out busy gambling, so Xiao Bei volunteers to help Jian Hong sell medicated ointment. As Xiao Bei is a good talker, the ointments sell out rapidly. Jian Hong shoves Xiao Bei some money and insists he keeps it. When Xiao Bei discovers Jian Hong pawned her gold necklaces to raise money for Xiao Bei to clear his debts, Xiao Bei is touched.

Jian Hong advises Wu Ji to look for a job, but Wu Ji refuses as he feels contented now. Xiao Bei drags Wu Ji along to the beauty contest to support Jin Hao, and Wu Ji feels shy seeing her in revealingly sleepwear. Despite her good performance, Jin Hao fails to get a placing. Xiao Bei learns that the result has been fixed, so he decides to help her claim justice. The owner of the mattress company tries to get into Jin Hao's pants. Xiao Bei and Wu Ji threaten to expose the guy in the newspaper, so the guy pays them off. When Jian Hong finds out, she blames Xiao Bei for leading Wu Ji astray.

Xiao Bei defends himself, but Jian Hong retorts that both Xiao Bei and Jin Hao are shameless. On hearing this, Jin Hao dashes out from Xiao Bei's room in anger, so Jian Hong is mistaken they are having an affair. Jian Hong refuses to listen to Xiao Bei's explanation. As Tarzan misunderstands that Xiao Bei bullied Jian Hong, he punches Xiao Bei before clarifying.

Xiao Bei and Jin Hao partner in touting tickets for the Japanese erotica film. Xiang Lin takes Mao Mao to the movie, and Mao Mao is embarrassed as they run into many people they know, including Lucy's god brother, plainclothes police Inspector Yang. Inspector Yang hints he will be teaching Mao Mao a lesson. The police raids Mao Mao's fruits shop. Xiao Bei alerts Hui Min to escape with the gambling bets, but De Hua finds Hui Min. Jian Hong persuades De Hua to let Hui Min off.

Mao Mao decides to apologise to Lucy, but Lucy demands an expensive apology feast. Mao Mao agrees reluctantly. As Yao Shi chalks up a huge gambling debt, Lucy suggests he let Jian Hong work as a dance hostess. When Jian Hong learns about the amount he owes, she is shocked.

Tarzan and Xiao Bei confirm with Jian Hong she is going to be a dance hostess, but they do not believe that she is doing it out of greed for money. They confront Yao Shi, who admits Jian Hong is helping him repay his debts. Yao Shi asks Xiao Bei if he will look down on Jian Hong. Though Xiao Bei replies no, Yao Shi says he will never let Jian Hong marry a good-for-nothing like him.

Wu Ji refuses to report for national service as he heard he needs to strip naked for the medical check. Jian Hong fails to change his mind, but Xiao Bei convinces Wu Ji. Xiao Bei tells Jian Hong he understands why she made that choice.

Wu Ji approaches “Big Black Mole”, who suggests that Wu Ji works as a transvestite on Bugis Street. Wu Ji accepts, and he practises walking with high heels shoes. When Jin Hao walks in on him, Wu Ji confides in her. It breaks Xiao Bei and Tarzan's heart when Lucy teaches Jian Hong how to dance, yet Jian Hong has trouble trying to dance alluringly.

Xiao Bei tries to help Jian Hong. He asks Jin Hao to chip in for the capital to sell a batch of fashionable new bras. To help with the business, Jin Hao volunteers to model for Xiao Bei, so he can take some product photographs. When Jin Hao learns that Xiao Bei is raising money for Jian Hong, Jin Hao asks Xiao Bei if he would do the same for her. Jin Hao is elated Xiao Bei says yes.

He Jiao returns. Xiao Bei and Jin Hao escape from her to avoid a misunderstanding, but Jian Hong spots them. Jian Hong is heartbroken and she decides to bring forward the day she starts working as a dance hostess. Hui Min worries for Jian Hong, so Jian Hong reassures Hui Min she will never become a prostitute.

Mao Mao and Xiang Lin treat Lucy and Inspector Yang to a lavish ‘bird's nest in chicken' meal. When Hui Min discovers that the police are accepting bribes openly, she wants her parents to file a report, yet her parents hesitate as Inspector Yang has a hold on them. Inspector Yang wants Lucy to find him an innocent-looking beauty so he can make his new superior cooperate with him. Lucy thinks of Jian Hong.

Xiao Bei gives Yao Shi some money and suggests that Yao Shi arrange to repay his debtors by instalments. Yao Shi is about to accept, but Jian Hong rejects Xiao Bei's money. To stop Xiao Bei and Tarzan from coming up with more ideas, she breaks off her friendship with them.

“Big Black Mole” sends his men to take Wu Ji to Bugis Street. The driver of the unlicensed taxi recognises Wu Ji and informs Yao Shi, but Yao Shi refuses to believe him.

Wu Ji runs away when a foreigner starts groping him. He runs into Hui Min, and she helps him avoid the men of “Big Black Mole”. Just as Wu Ji thinks he is safe, he bumps into Yao Shi.

Yao Shi blows his top. Hui Min gets into trouble with the men of “Big Black Mole” because of Wu Ji. A Caucasian man stops the gangsters from bullying Hui Min, and he introduces himself as Jack, an American soldier stationed in Vietnam.

Yao Shi beats Wu Ji up. Jin Hao informs Jian Hong, but when Jian Hong returns home, Wu Ji is already unconscious. Jin Hao manages to find an empty unlicensed taxi to take Wu Ji to the hospital, but its driver is nowhere to be found. Tarzan volunteers to drive Wu Ji, but they nearly meet with an accident. Fortunately, they meet Xiao Bei on the way and he saves the day.

Xiao Bei and Tarzan yell at Yao Shi as they explain why Wu Ji works as a transvestite. Feeling remorse, Yao Shi asks the two lads to beat him up. Though Xiao Bei and Tarzan helped Jian Hong, she insists they are no longer friends. Meanwhile, Tarzan gives up his dream of becoming a car racer.

Xiang Lin brings home a television set, with the intention of organising ‘tikam' gambling. Hui Min advises him to drop the idea, as the government is clamping down on ‘tikam', but Xiang Lin refuses to listen to her. Tarzan becomes interested in wrestling after watching it on television. When he learns a wrestler nicknamed “Tiger King” is accepting students, he enrols for his classes.

Jin Hao makes Xiao Bei audition with her at a recording company, yet she blames Xiao Bei for quashing her dream of becoming a singer. Xiao Bei advises her to face up to the reality that she cannot sing. Just as Jin Hao is about to leave in disappointment, they are given another chance to audition again.

Hui Min understands Jian Hong breaks her friendship with Xiao Bei and Tarzan for their own good. While Jian Hong knows the others will look down on her, she believes she can keep her self-respect as long as she doesn't prostitute herself. After asking around, Xiao Bei discovers the sort of humiliation dance hostesses have to tolerate. As he fears Jian Hong cannot adjust to that kind of environment, he takes Jian Hong out drinking and provokes her with harsh words. Tarzan gets angry and he wants to hit Xiao Bei.

Xiang Lin uses attractive prizes as draw for his ‘tikam' business, but he rigs the spinning wheel so that it is impossible to win. When everyone has their eyes on the big prizes, all Tarzan wants is a small bracelet. Xiang Lin lies that the bracelet has been blessed by a powerful monk, so Tarzan plans to give it to Jian Hong. On seeing Tarzan spends a lot of money on betting, Xiang Lin gives Tarzan a chance. Jian Hong accepts the bracelet with gratitude.

A year passed. Xiao Bei and Wu Ji become members of the People's Defence Force; Jin Hao has signed with a recording company; Tarzan does well in learning wrestling; and Hui Min gets into university…

Hui Min gets interviewed for topping the general examination. While He Jiao tries to share Hui Min's limelight, Wu Ji blames Yao Shi for causing him to drop out from school. Yao Shi's gambling habit has also gone from bad to worse, so Wu Ji worries there will be no end to Jian Hong's plight.

Tarzan teaches Yao Shi a lesson with his wrestling skills. Xiao Bei praises his proficiency in wrestling, so Tarzan sets his mind on becoming a wrestler.

Every night, Xiao Bei waits for Jian Hong outside the nightclub to protect her. Although Jian Hong refuses to entertain her customers beyond accompanying them to dance, Lucy wants her to entertain Yu Ming. Yu Ming is Inspector Yang's superior, and Inspector Yang is secretly trying to get rid of him by using Jian Hong.

When Jin Hao asks when she can release an album, Manager Niu hints for her to make some sacrifices. Jin Hao agrees to accompany Manager Niu on his business trip to Kuala Lumpur. When Wu Ji discovers, he follows them secretly.

Jian Hong searches for Wu Ji as he is missing. She has been keeping a low profile since she became a dance hostess, yet Xiao Bei insists on making their friendship known and follows her day-in and day-out. Jian Hong is bemused by his behaviour.

Despite giving Xiao Bei the cold shoulder, Jian Hong still cares for him. When she discovers “Big Black Mole” is out to get Xiao Bei, Jian Hong helps Xiao Bei. Hui Min advises Jian Hong not to hide her feelings for Xiao Bei anymore, but Jian Hong feels inferior. Hui Min has a bad cough for a long time. As there are rumours of a Hong Kong Flu epidemic, Xiang Lin and Mao Mao worry for Hui Min.

Jin Hao refuses Manager Niu, but he spikes her drink. Fortunately, Wu Ji shows up in time. Though Jin Hao escapes rape, she is sad she lost her chance of becoming a singer.

As Hui Min fails to recover from her bad cough, He Jiao seizes the chance to spread rumours about her health, so as to instigate the other tenants to force her family to move out.

Xiang Lin and Mao Mao refuse to move, so He Jiao snitch on Mao Mao's illegal betting business. Yu Ming arrests Xiang Lin and Mao Mao, but he hopes they can help expose the corrupted cops within the force. As Inspector Yang warns the couple beforehand, they kept their silence.

Jian Hong and Xiao Bei take turns to take care of Hui Min, as they fear He Jiao will try to evict Hui Min again. In appreciation, Hui Min wants Jian Hong to be her god-sister. Jian Hong refuses as she feels inferior. Yu Ming is attracted to Jian Hong, so Inspector Yang and Lucy are secretly pleased.

When Yu Ming discovers why Jian Hong became a dance hostess, he reveals his father is also a gambler. That is why he tries hard to clamp down gambling. Jian Hong feels he is a good police officer.

Xiao Bei scares away a customer that tries to drag Jian Hong to a hotel. Jian Hong knows Xiao Bei is protecting her secretly, so she is filled with gratitude.

Li Fa docks Tarzan's pay for accepting a counterfeit $50 note. Tired of working in the coffee shop, Tarzan tries to enter a Southeast Asian wrestling competition by approaching a professional manager. The manager dissuades him, while another wrestler makes a fool out of Tarzan to please his lady companion. Tarzan vows revenge.

Xiao Bei gets disqualified from a man hunt contest, but it inspires him to organise his own competitions. He convinces the person in charge of an expo to let him organise a “Miss Swimwear” contest.

Jian Hong feels perturbed by Yao Shi's gambling habit, so Xiao Bei suggests hypnotism. Jian Hong refutes him. Yao Shi chalks up another huge gambling debt. Jian Hong begs Yao Shi to give her a break, so Yao Shi smashes his hands with a rock out of shame.

Tarzan spots the guy that gave him the counterfeit note. Though the guy escape, he leaves behind a lot of counterfeit notes. Tarzan thinks of using the counterfeit notes to settle Yao Shi's debt.

As “Big Black Mole” read about the counterfeit notes in the news, Tarzan gets a beating instead. Xiao Bei saves Tarzan, but Tarzan is seriously injured. At the hospital, Tarzan tells Xiao Bei he concedes defeat, but Xiao Bei lectures him about giving up Jian Hong so easily. Tarzan asks Jian Hong for a date. To his surprise, she accepts.

Xiao Bei ‘borrows' a customer's suit for his pageant press conference, and Lin Yi panics when he discovers the suit missing. Hui Min worries Xiao Bei will get into more trouble, but he is confident he will succeed. Jin Hao enters the pageant and she wants Wu Ji to give her a swimsuit. Wu Ji uses the rent money for his comic book stall to buy Jin Hao one, so Jian Hong thinks he is irresponsible. When Wu Ji retorts he is tired of being penniless due to Yao Shi's gambling habit, Jian Hong is speechless.

Inspector Yang and Lucy want Jian Hong to get Yu Ming drunk, so they can report him to the anti-corruption bureau and have Yu Ming fired. Jian Hong obeys, but Xiao Bei is mistaken Yu Ming wants to rape Jian Hong. With no time to explain, Jian Hong slaps Xiao Bei. After Xiao Bei leaves, she wakes Yu Ming up and asks him to leave.

Hui Min senses something is wrong between Jian Hong and Xiao Bei. Instead of telling Hui Min what happened, Xiao Bei asks for her help. To get his pageant in the news, Xiao Bei needs to let the reporter photograph someone in swimsuit. He is surprised Hui Min agrees, while Jin Hao seizes the chance as her opportunity in becoming famous.

Though Tarzan wins his bet with Xiao Bei, he discovers Jian Hong agrees only out of gratitude.

Tarzan wants another bet because he believes Xiao Bei loses to him deliberately, but Xiao Bei advises Tarzan to be more practical, as Jian Hong may already have other suitors.

Jian Hong worries Inspector Yang and Lucy will hold a grudge against her because she let Yu Ming go, yet Lucy offers to help Jian Hong settle her father's debt. In reality, Lucy is plotting her revenge.

Jin Hao is furious the article featured only Hui Min, while He Jiao stirs trouble by telling Mao Mao that Xiao Bei made use of Hui Min. Mao Mao and Xiang Lin confront Lin Yi and A Wei, so Lin Yi reprimands Xiao Bei. His scolding falls onto deaf ears, as Xiao Bei is elated he gets publicity for his pageant. Hui Min speaks up for Xiao Bei, and her speech about women's liberation shocks everyone.

Yu Ming visits Jian Hong to thank her. Tarzan misunderstands Yu Ming is harassing Jian Hong, but Xiao Bei stops him from attacking Yu Ming. As Tarzan argues with Xiao Bei, Jian Hong reveals Xiao Bei is mistaken about her and Yu Ming. Tarzan reprimands Xiao Bei for not believing in Jian Hong.

He Jiao arranges a matchmaking session for Jin Hao, so Wu Ji gets worried. Jin Hao asks Wu Ji to help sabotage the session, but it is Xiao Bei who takes Jin Hao away from it instead. He Jiao is furious and she demands compensation from Lin Yi and A Wei.

Xiao Bei plans to stage a ‘Mermaid A-go-go' performance during the pageant. Jin Hao claims she is an A-go-go expert, but when Xiao Bei asks her to teach the ‘mermaid', she fails to deliver. Jian Hong offers her help.

As He Jiao insists that Lin Yi compensates her, Lin Yi blames Xiao Bei for being a troublemaker. Xiao Bei decides to move out to pursue his dreams, so he entrusts his parents into Jian Hong's care. Jian Hong agrees. Tarzan wants to follow Xiao Bei. Though Xiao Bei turns him down, Tarzan is determined.

He Jiao fears Jin Hao will leave with the guys, so she refuses to let Jin Hao step out of the house. On the night of the pageant, Jin Hao asks Hui Min for help, and Hui Min manages to get her there on time.

To Jin Hao's surprise, someone else is made champion. Jin Hao feels Xiao Bei betrayed her.

The pageant is a huge success and Xiao Bei gives everyone a treat, but Jin Hao is still displeased. Tarzan chides Jin Hao, but Jin Hao insists Xiao Bei must have accepted bribe. Xiao Bei admits and he promises to make up to Jin Hao, yet Jin Hao leaves without taking his money.

Xiao Bei gives Tarzan $800 for his cut in the profit, but reveals he kept $12,000. When Xiao Bei explains he plan to use it to redeem Jian Hong, Tarzan returns his share to Xiao Bei as well.

Jin Hao is upset Xiao Bei betrayed her. Wu Ji comforts her, so Jin Hao treats him to a piece of cake. When He Jiao walks in, Wu Ji returns the cake cowardly, and Jin Hao is furious with Wu Ji's timidity. Regretting his reaction, Wu Ji asks Jin Hao to give him a treat again. This time, he eats the cake and ignores He Jiao's screaming. Wu Ji tells Jian Hong he wants to look for a job as he no longer wants to be a useless bum. Jian Hong is elated.

After a short hiatus, Yao Shi starts gambling again. Jian Hong asks Yu Ming for help, so he raids the gambling den and gives Yao Shi a warning. He even spot checks on Yao Shi, so Jian Hong is grateful.

Jian Hong finally quits, and she makes a living by selling household items. Wu Ji finds a job in a finance company; Xiao Bei makes a lot of money by organising various types of contests; and Tarzan fulfils his wish of becoming a wrestler.

A rich young man hires Jin Hao as his secretary, but all she needs to do is to accompany him gallivanting every day. One day, he makes Jin Hao dress up as Marilyn Monroe. Jian Hong advises Tarzan to quit being a wrestler, but Tarzan insists, as this is the only area he can do better than Xiao Bei. He vows to outdo Xiao Bei and marry Jian Hong. When he professes his love, Jian Hong is at a loss what she should do.

Xiao Bei and Tarzan return home with a lot of expensive electrical appliances, and He Jiao warms up to Xiao Bei. Lin Yi and A Wei are pleased with Xiao Bei's success, but A Wei warns Xiao Bei to be wary of the ‘fox spirit'. When Xiao Bei realises A Wei refers to Jian Hong, he rebukes her.

Xiao Bei wants to take Jian Hong to a hotel for high tea. He also gives Jian Hong some money, but Jin Hao shouts “Xiao Bei Darling” from upstairs. Although Xiao Bei explains that Jin Hao forced him, Jian Hong is displeased Xiao Bei pushes all the blame on Jin Hao.

Xiao Bei consults Hui Min, who advises Xiao Bei to marry Jian Hong soon. De Hua proposes to Jian Hong again suddenly. Yao Shi advises Jian Hong to accept, but she objects. Yao Shi asks Jian Hong to forget Xiao Bei, as A Wei has been speaking ill of her. De Hua warns Xiao Bei to stay away from Jian Hong or he will ‘take care' of him. When Xiao Bei rebukes him, he gives Xiao Bei a sinister look.

Jian Hong ponders if she should elope with Xiao Bei. When she finally decides to heed Hui Min's advice and is about to start packing, Wu Ji tells her that Jin Hao is getting herself drunk. She hurries to stop Jin Hao.

“Big Black Mole” instigates Jin Hao to injure Jian Hong. When Xiao Bei arrives, he takes Jian Hong to a hospital. Although Xiao Bei suspects Jin Hao, Wu Ji claims “Big Black Mole” is responsible. Xiao Bei tries to seek revenge, but “Big Black Mole” is armed. After Xiao Bei leaves, De Hua appears and he kills “Big Black Mole”. De Hua frames Xiao Bei for the murder.

Although Xiao Bei claims innocence, De Hua persuades him to plead guilty. Xiao Bei refuses. Hui Min hires a lawyer for Xiao Bei and she tries to find some witnesses. When Mao Mao and Xiang Lin try to stop her, Hui Min rebukes them by saying she cannot be ungrateful towards Xiao Bei and Jian Hong.

Hui Min locates a crucial witness, but the witness feigns ignorance. Jian Hong disregards her injury to beg the witness, so the witness finally agrees to testify.

Heartbroken, Jin Hao falls sick. He Jiao seeks help from a Taoist priest. Yao Shi finally agrees to let Xiao Bei and Jian Hong be together, but Jian Hong stops Xiao Bei from telling his parents as A Wei is still unwell.

Wu Ji is worried Jin Hao fails to get better. In her daze, Jin Hao mistakes Wu Ji for Xiao Bei and she holds on to him tightly. Wu Ji panics as he will be late for work.

Wu Ji's manager Yan Xia, who is also his boss' spinster daughter, likes Wu Ji. She intends to let Wu Ji handle the distribution of the employees' salaries, and she hints at promoting Wu Ji.

The Taoist priest instructs He Jiao to keep watch while he ‘treats' Jin Hao in her room alone. Xiao Bei advises He Jiao to open the door but she refuses. Wu Ji breaks in and rescues Jin Hao from being raped.

When Jin Hao recovers, she changes her attitude towards Wu Ji. Wu Ji is elated. Tarzan tailors a pair of bell-bottomed pants and Lin Yi cannot understand how this strange-looking pair of pants can get so popular.

A thug comes collecting protection money in a Bruce Lee outfit, and Tarzan wants to teach him a lesson for insulting his idol. Jian Hong wants Xiao Bei to stop him, but Xiao Bei eggs Tarzan on instead. Concerned about Xiao Bei's uninhibited nature, Jian Hong advises Tarzan not to obey Xiao Bei all the time.

Tarzan is facing “Mountain Wolf” in a duel soon, and “Mountain Wolf” secretly vows to end Tarzan's wrestling career. Despite Xiao Bei's assurance that “Mountain Wolf” will comply with the organiser's results arrangement, Tarzan continues to practise hard.

Jian Hong worries for Tarzan's safety, so she advises Xiao Bei to call the match off. Xiao Bei reassures her that the match is staged and there will be no real danger, but Jian Hong still feels uneasy.

He Jiao gets a matchmaker to find Tarzan a wife. Tarzan resists at first, until he meets Jin Zhu. Xiao Bei sponsors Tarzan to have his first date with Jin Zhu, and love blossoms between Tarzan and Jin Zhu.

At the match, “Mountain Wolf” resorts to dirty tricks and hurts Tarzan's groin. Xiao Bei ambushes “Mountain Wolf” but gets beaten up instead. When Xiao Bei arrives at the hospital, he discovers Tarzan may be incapable of having children. The neighbours stop He Jiao from attacking Xiao Bei. Lin Yi and A Wei think He Jiao is too harsh on their son, yet Xiao Bei apologises. He Jiao wants him to take full responsibility.

On discovering Tarzan's condition, Xiang Lin plans to get back at He Jiao by conning her. He pretends he knows a miracle doctor, so He Jiao begs him for help.

Xiao Bei turns into a recluse. He asks Jian Hong to give all his money to Tarzan, but avoids visiting Tarzan personally. After his surgery, Tarzan becomes extremely sensitive and violent. Jian Hong feels sad.

Tarzan wants Jian Hong to tell Xiao Bei he does not blame him, but Xiao Bei continues to mope around. Jian Hong asks Hui Min for help. Hui Min points out that only Jian Hong can help Xiao Bei, as she is the most important person in his heart!

Jin Hao starts working as a perfume salesgirl and she agrees to have lunch with Wu Ji one day. After she talks to restaurant owner Zheng Dong, she gets close to Wu Ji and asks if he can smell Zheng Dong's body odour on her. Wu Ji gets excited.

Yao Shi wants Jian Hong to ditch Xiao Bei and marry roast meat shop owner “Pig Skull”. Jian Hong ignores him. He then wants to find Wu Ji a wife, but Wu Ji knows he wants only Jin Hao.

Wu Ji accompanies Yan Xia shopping and she is upset when Wu Ji gets chummy with Jin Hao. After Wu Ji saves Yan Xia from an armed robber, Yan Xia treats him differently, and rumours spread within the office that Yan Xia is interested in Wu Ji. Wu Ji ignores the rumours at first, until his boss invites him for dinner.

Yao Shi asks Lin Yi to tailor Wu Ji a new suit for the dinner, while Wu Ji is both happy and worried. He is happy he has hopes for a promotion, but worried what he should do if Yan Xia is really interested in him.

Not even Jian Hong can persuade Xiao Bei to liven up, so Tarzan asks Jian Hong to take Xiao Bei to him. Xiao Bei accidentally discovers the miracle doctor is in cahoots with Xiang Lin, and Tarzan has no hope of recovering. His sense of guilt deepens.

Yao Shi publicises around that Wu Ji is invited to dinner with his big boss. This is the first time Wu Ji feels he can make Yao Shi proud. Feeling encouraged, Wu Ji asks Jin Hao out for a movie, and Jin Hao accepts.

The boss likes Wu Ji, and Wu Ji gets a promotion after agreeing to date Yan Xia. Jin Hao, who is clueless Wu Ji has chosen his career over her, feels happy for him.

Zheng Dong tells Jin Hao he likes her. Though Jin Hao has no feelings for him, she hesitates on thinking she can become a rich tai-tai after marrying him.

Jian Hong stops A Wei from pampering Xiao Bei with lots of food, yet A Wei hits her with a spatula. Jian Hong asks Lin Yi for help, but even a beating fails to rouse Xiao Bei. Jian Hong drags Xiao Bei to Tarzan and Tarzan gives him a good scolding. As Xiao Bei continues to mope around, Hui Min thinks of a plan and they make Xiao Bei agree to become a fishmonger.

Tarzan gets discharged and He Jiao agrees to give Jin Zhu's parents $6,000 as dowry. Tarzan overhears Jin Zhu telling her mother she is willing to marry Tarzan regardless of the rumours. Although he feels touched, he decides not to sacrifice Jin Zhu's happiness on second thought.

Tarzan asks Xiao Bei to leave home with him again, and he pays a prostitute to convince Xiao Bei he is well. Unfortunately, Xiao Bei sees through his ploy. When the “miracle doctor” tries to cheat He Jiao again, Tarzan exposes his tricks and beats him up.

Tarzan tells He Jiao he refuses to marry Jin Zhu. Later that night when he is alone, Tarzan cries as he truly loves Jin Zhu. When Xiao Bei fails to show up on the day Tarzan plans to go away, Tarzan leaves alone.

Tarzan wants revenge. He discovers “Mountain Wolf”, scorned by the wrestling world, is now participating in underground matches. Tarzan joins in so he can meet “Mountain Wolf” in the rink again.

Xiao Bei tells Jian Hong he has no intention of selling fish or helping Jian Hong at her stall. He decides to become a tailor, but is really bad at it. Jian Hong encourages Xiao Bei not to give up on himself, yet Xiao Bei wants a break-up. Disappointed, Jian Hong returns Xiao Bei his ring and she agrees to marry “Pig Skull”.

Wu Ji dashes in to save Jin Hao, but both of them get trapped. Touched by Wu Ji's sincerity, Jin Hao promises to marry Wu Ji if they survive the fire. The fire fighters save them, so Jin Hao intends to tell their parents about her relationship with Wu Ji.

Wu Ji plans to reject Yan Xia, but later decides to give Jin Hao up instead. Jin Hao is deeply hurt when Wu Ji denies their wedding plans in front of their parents.

Xiao Bei asks “Pig Skull” to give up on marrying Jian Hong, but “Pig Skull” refuses. When he fails to dissuade Jian Hong, Xiao Bei seeks help from Hui Min. Hui Min try to help the couple patch up secretly.

Xiang Lin runs away with Mao Mao's money. He plans to cohabit with his young new lover, but gets conned instead. Now penniless, he tries to ask his neighbour for a bowl of noodles, but another neighbour informs Mao Mao. Mao Mao tries to torch Xiang Lin down, so Xiang Lin advises Xiao Bei not to end up like him. Xiao Bei gets enlightened!

Jin Hao stops He Jiao. Wu Ji feels guilty, yet Yao Shi is elated both his children are getting married. On the day “Pig Skull” is presenting Jian Hong his betrothal gifts, Jian Hong quietly awaits her fate.

Xiao Bei intercepts “Pig Skull”, and “Pig Skull” beats Xiao Bei up.

Jian Hong realises something is amiss. When she arrives, Xiao Bei is badly beaten up, yet he refuses to let “Pig Skull” get past. On seeing Jian Hong still loves Xiao Bei, “Pig Skull” gives Xiao Bei the betrothal gifts. Xiao Bei and Jian Hong tell Lin Yi and A Wei they wish to get married. Although A Wei objects, Lin Yi convinces her.

Tarzan watches on sadly as Xiao Bei and Jian Hong prepare to get married, while “Mountain Wolf” accepts Tarzan's challenge. “Japanese Guy” informs Xiao Bei as he is afraid “Mountain Wolf” will plot against Tarzan, but Tarzan refuses to listen to Xiao Bei. Although “Mountain Wolf” resorts to dirty tricks, he is no match for Tarzan. Tarzan is about to make “Mountain Wolf” suffer his same fate, but later decides to spare the guy.

Wu Ji shows Yao Shi his new house. All of a sudden, Yan Xia accuses Wu Ji of keeping his family background from her. She threatens to call off their wedding and fire Wu Ji, so Wu Ji begs Yan Xia. Yan Xia wants him to relinquish his ties with his family, and she will not let Yao Shi and Jian Hong attend their wedding, nor offer tea to Yao Shi. Wu Ji agrees. When Yao Shi objects, Wu Ji says he brings this to himself.

Jian Hong advises Wu Ji to stand up to Yan Xia, for the least she can do is offer tea to Yao Shi on their wedding day. Wu Ji keeps quiet as Yan Xia promotes him and gives him car and chauffeur benefits.

Jin Hao begs Wu Ji, so he helps her escape. He Jiao is furious and Jian Hong has to stop her from entering their room. Yao Shi scolds Wu Ji, for he can avoid He Jiao after he moves away, but Yao Shi and Jian Hong have to face her every day. When Wu Ji promises to help them move, Yao Shi mocks at his son.

Yao Shi is frustrated, yet he has to put up a happy front when the neighbours congratulate him. He decides he must let Yan Xia offer him tea at all costs. On Wu Ji's wedding day, He Jiao tries to splash him with human waste, but Xiang Lin bumps right into her. No matter how Mao Mao treats him, Xiang Lin refuses to leave or divorce Mao Mao.

Jian Hong gets worried when Yao Shi dresses up and claims he is going to accept tea offering from his daughter-in-law. Instead of hiding in a hotel as Wu Ji arranged, Yao Shi arrives at Wu Ji's new home. Jian Hong and Xiao Bei try to stop him, and Yan Xia refuses to let them in. Yao Shi coughs out blood in anger…

Jin Hao blames herself for causing Xiao Bei's death. After her ordeal in Hong Kong, Jin Hao gives up on herself and becomes an escort girl. Jian Hong fails to dissuade Jin Hao, while Li Fa feels ashamed of the way Jin Hao dresses. As they often have conflicts, Jin Hao leaves home for good.

Jian Hong gives birth to a boy and Tarzan names him Yi Xin. Tarzan insists that Yi Xin calls him uncle, but Jian Hong objects. Tarzan feels grateful. Time flies. Yi Xin is now eight years old. When Yi Xin is playing on the street, Xiao Bei watches him from afar secretly…

Yi Xin asks He Jiao if his friends are telling the truth when they say he is not Tarzan's son because Tarzan is a ‘eunuch'. He Jiao tries to stop Yi Xin, but Jian Hong overhears.

Jian Hong beats Yi Xin in anger. Fortunately, Hui Min arrives. Yi Xin sends Lin Yi and A Wei some food. The couple has closed their tailor shop and work from home. A Wei cried her eyes blind from missing Xiao Bei, but she thinks Yi Xin resembles Xiao Bei. Lin Yi stops her as it will give Jian Hong trouble.

Jian Hong asks Hui Min if she intends to get married, but Hui Min has no feelings for her suitor Louis, who is a doctor. They also reminisce it has been almost 10 years since Xiao Bei died, not knowing he is still alive.

Xiao Bei now leads a vagabond life. One night, he thinks back of that fateful day.

Xiao Bei survives the shots, but his captors turn him into a junkie and force him to smuggle drugs. In Holland, Xiao Bei runs into De Hua, who is now a drug dealer. Tarzan partners a friend in managing a tropical fish farm, and he promises to pay for A Wei's eye surgery. Unfortunately, his friend absconds with his money.

While searching for a witness, Hui Min gets attacked by a junkie. Xiao Bei helps her.

Hui Min is shocked, but Xiao Bei begs her to keep his survival a secret, especially from Jian Hong and Tarzan. Hui Min agrees as she understands his concerns, but she makes Xiao Bei promise never to leave without a word. Xiao Bei moves in with Louis and Hui Min gets him a job in her law firm.

Jin Hao is now a rich man's mistress, but she squanders her money on gambling. The rich man's wife wants to teach Jin Hao a lesson, but Jin Hao retaliates by splashing kerosene on her attackers and herself. Shocked with her response, the rich man ditches her.

Jin Hao loses all her money and she tries to prostitute herself again, but a man claims she has venereal disease. When a doctor confirms her condition, Jin Hao demands compensation from the rich man. The rich man beats her up instead.

Tarzan makes some money in the share market and he buys Jian Hong a ring. Jian Hong cries as it brings back memories of Xiao Bei, and Tarzan realises she still misses Xiao Bei.

A Wei claims she saw Xiao Bei, while Yi Xin says he was once saved by someone who resembles Xiao Bei. Jian Hong begins to suspect she did meet Xiao Bei that day, but she soon overturns that thought.

Hui Min asks Jian Hong what she would do if Xiao Bei is still alive, since Tarzan is only her husband in name. Jian Hong replies with conviction that nothing can change the experiences they shared as husband and wife. Hui Min feels ashamed of herself.

Xiao Bei plans to go sailing. Overcome by her emotions, Hui Min begs Xiao Bei to stay. Xiao Bei rejects her.

Jin Hao gets confused and she escapes from the hospital. She asks Wu Ji for money, so Wu Ji suggests she gets someone to ‘rob' him. Yan Xia sees through his tricks, but Jin Hao runs to the rooftop with the money. Claiming she needs it to rescue Xiao Bei, Jin Hao refuses to return the money…

Jian Hong, Tarzan and Hui Min try to stop Jin Hao from attempting suicide, yet Jin Hao refuses to step down.

Hui Min knows only Xiao Bei can save Jin Hao, so she fetches him there. Everyone is shocked to see Xiao Bei. Jin Hao finally gives up her suicidal thoughts, but she falls backwards from exhaustion.

Jian Hong blacks out. When she comes to, she learns that Xiao Bei manages to stop Jin Hao from falling off the building. The doctor discovers Jian Hong has brain tumour and needs surgery.

Lin Yi and Ah Wei are elated to see Xiao Bei, while He Jiao worries he will snatch Jian Hong away. Tarzan reprimands his mother. After some drinks, Tarzan tells Xiao Bei he will return Jian Hong to him when she gets well, but Xiao Bei punches him for harbouring such a thought.

When Jian Hong sees Tarzan injured, she guesses Xiao Bei must have punched Tarzan for saying the wrong thing. Tarzan admits he is a fool, but Jian Hong claims he is only childlike. Tarzan asks Jian Hong to promise she will wake up from her surgery, and Jian Hong agrees.

Jian Hong goes into surgery. Her heart stops during surgery, but her will to live is strong. Though she survives, she slips into a coma, and the doctor says Jian Hong may lose part of or all of her memory.

Tarzan takes Yi Xin to the fish farm, so He Jiao asks Yi Xin to keep an eye on Xiao Bei. Yi Xin dislikes Xiao Bei, so Tarzan ill treats Yi Xin, hoping this can bring Yi Xin and Xiao Bei closer. Yi Xin sees through Tarzan's intention, and he writes in his diary Tarzan will always be his best father no matter what. Xiao Bei knows in his heart Yi Xin will never be as close to him as he is to Tarzan…

Jian Hong comes to, but she cannot remember Yi Xin or the recent past. On the doctor's advice, everyone decides to let Jian Hong recuperate at the fish farm and not rush her into regaining her memory.

Xiao Bei wants Tarzan to stop creating opportunities for him and Jian Hong, yet Tarzan persists.

Hui Min patches up with Louis. While visiting Jian Hong, she asks Xiao Bei about his future plans, since Jian Hong is gradually regaining her memory. Xiao Bei plans on becoming a sailor, but Hui Min tells him her heartfelt thoughts. She thinks Xiao Bei should stay to give Jian Hong her well-deserved bliss, and believes Tarzan and the others will gradually accept them. Tarzan decides to leave.

Jian Hong regains her memory. Yi Xin falls into a pond and Xiao Bei jumps in to save him. However, Xiao Bei gets tangled by some seaweed. Yi Xin shouts for his mother, and Jian Hong rescues Xiao Bei with a bamboo pole. The family finally reunite…

It is now the 1990s. Yi Xin is all grown up and a member of the Special Forces in fighting terrorists.

The government requisites the old building in North Bridge Road for demolition, so the old neighbours return for a reunion on the last day Li Fa is operating his coffee shop. He Jiao is upset Li Fa's wife and son in China are coming for a visit, so Jian Hong and Jin Hao comfort her.
