List of Marilyns in the Northern Highlands

This is a list of the 391 Marilyns in the Highlands of Scotland, north of the Great Glen.

Marilyns are hills in the British Isles with a relative height of at least 150 metres (492 ft) irrespective of height. The list was compiled by Alan Dawson and published in The Relative Hills of Britain.^[1]

Included in the list are all Corbetts and Grahams in this part of Scotland. Corbetts are Scottish mountains that are 2500–3000 ft (762.0–914.4 m) high with a relative height of 500 feet (152.4 m). The list was compiled in the 1920s by John Rooke Corbett, a Bristol-based climber and SMC member, and was published posthumously after it was passed to the SMC by his sister.^[2] (A metric definition requiring 150 m of relative height is sometimes used; use of the broader definition does not result in any additional summits being included.) Grahams are Scottish mountains that are 2000–2500 ft (609.6–762.0 m) high. The list of hills fitting these criteria was first published by Alan Dawson in The Relative Hills of Britain under the provisional name Elsies (LCs, short for Lesser Corbetts).^[1] They were later named Grahams after the late Fiona Torbet (née Graham) who had compiled a similar list around the same time.

In the tables below, rows have be coloured according to which lists the hills are on. (Note that only Munros that are additionally Marilyns are included in this list – see also a complete list of Munros.)

In the parent column, the prominence parent is used, as opposed to any other definition of 'parent'. The prominence parent of peak A can be found by dividing the island or region in question into territories, by tracing the runoff from the key col of every peak that is higher than peak A. The parent is the peak whose territory peak A resides in.

Of the 391 Marilyns on this list, 79 are Munros, 101 are Corbetts, 84 are Grahams and 127 are none of those. There is additionally one mountain, Buidhe Bheinn (NG963090), that is generally considered a Corbett but not a Marilyn.¹

^1 Sgùrr a' Bhac Chaolais and Buidhe Bheinn both have a height of 885 m and are separated by a drop of 122 m. They are collectively separated from Creag nan Damh (their parent) by a 163 m drop making one of them a Marilyn. However, without more accurate heights, it is impossible to say which is the Marilyn, making them an example of a twin peak. In their list of Corbetts, the Scottish Mountaineering Club treat both mountains as Corbetts;^[2] however, by convention, only Sgùrr a' Bhac Chaolais is usually considered to be a Marilyn.^[1] Although the SMC maintains the list of Corbetts, Buidhe Bheinn is not universally recognised as a Corbett leading to confusion as to whether there are 220 or 219 Corbetts.^[3]

^2 Rois-Bheinn and Beinn Odhar Bheag are another example of a twin peak, both having a height of 882 m. As they are separated by a drop of 524 m, both are Marilyns and Corbetts. Following the precedent established in Corbett Tops and Corbetteers, Rois-Bheinn is assumed to be higher when stating the relative height and parent.^[3]

^3 Càrn na Coinnich and Meall nan Damh, Beinn Tharsuinn and Sidhean a' Choin Bhain, and Creag Thoraraidh and Cnoc Coir a' Phuill are three more pairs of twin tops. In each case, the summit with the trig point (Càrn na Coinnich, Beinn Tharsuinn and Creag Thoraraidh respectively) is, by convention, considered to be higher and therefore the Marilyn (and Graham where appropriate).^[4][5]
