Full Metal Panic! DVD, Volume 1 released in North America.

The episodes of the Japanese anime television series Full Metal Panic! are directed by Koichi Chigira and animated by Gonzo. They are based on the light novel series of the same name, written by Shoji Gatoh and illustrated by Shiki Douji, using material from the first three novels (Fighting Boy Meets Girl, Running One Night Stand, and Into the Blue) of the series over 24 episodes. The series focuses on Sousuke Sagara, a Sergeant from the mercenary group Mithril who is assigned to protect Kaname Chidori, student from a Japanese high school. The first season began in Japan, on January 8, 2002, and ended on June 18, 2002.

The spinoff series, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, and a second season, Full Metal Panic!: The Second Raid (which, starting from its fourth episode, follows the Sigma manga series), are directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto and animated by Kyoto Animation and is adapted from the two Ending Day by Day novels. The spinoff aired between August 25, 2003 and November 18, 2003 and the second season aired between July 13, 2005 and October 19, 2005. An original video animation (OVA), which has not been broadcast, was released on DVD on May 26, 2006. For the North American release, the first season and the spinoff series were licensed by ADV Films and the second season was licensed by Kadokawa Pictures USA.

The opening theme song to Full Metal Panic! was "tomorrow", while its ending theme song was "Never Dying Flower" (枯れない花 Karenai Hana). The opening theme song to Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu was "Is That Love?" (それが、愛でしょう? Sore ga, Ai deshou?) and the ending theme was "The Wind that Blows to You" (君に吹く風 Kimi ni Fuku Kaze). The opening theme for Full Metal Panic!: The Second Raid was "Southerly Wind" (南風 Minami Kaze) and the ending theme was "I Want to See You Again" (もう一度君に会いたい Mou Ichido Kimi ni Aitai). All songs were performed by Mikuni Shimokawa.

However, because of his speech and actions, he comes across as "weird" to Chidori, though she admits he is "interesting" in a phone call.

The terrorists kidnap Kaname and subject her to scientific testing. Unable to bear the thought of her potential fate, Sousuke infiltrates the base and attempts to rescue Kaname.

Sousuke saves Kaname and commandeers an Arm Slave (AS) while Mithril launches a rescue operation. When Sousuke confronts Gauron, Melissa and Kurz arrive to provide back-up so he and Kaname can escape with the other students; however, they miss the rescue planes and are left behind. 
06 "Still Alive"

Sousuke and Kaname seek refuge in the woods, where they find Kurz who was wounded after Gauron destroyed his AS. As the enemy closes in, the three attempt to communicate with Mithril. Under fire, help arrives just in time when Mithril sends Sousuke's new AS, the Arbalest. 
07 "Boy Meets Girl"

When Mizuki Inaba's boyfriend, Shirai, asks Kaname out, a jealous Mizuki spreads vicious lies about her around the school. However, Mizuki's actions causes her boyfriend to dump her for being overbearing. Mizuki is then forced to ask Sousuke to be her boyfriend when she meets with her friends. 
09 "Dangerous Safe House"

Tessa is sent to see Takuma Kugayama, a young boy captured at Narita whom Mithril suspects of being capable of operating the Lambda Driver. However, the A21 terrorist group attacks the compound to free their comrade, but Tessa flees with him to Sousuke's safe house.

Kaname visits Sousuke's apartment, becoming involved with Mithril's situation. They realize that the apartment is no longer safe, taking Takuma to the Jindai High campus for safekeeping. However, the terrorists locate him and capture Tessa and Kaname. Sousuke is forced to give up Takuma for the two girls. 
11 "Behemoth Awakening"

The hostage exchange goes awry, and instead Tessa and Kaname are taken to the terrorists' hide-out inside a tanker. Sousuke regroups with Kurz and Melissa to rescue their friends. During the rescue attempt, Takuma activates the massive Behemoth AS.

The Behemoth chases Sousuke, Kurz, Kaname, and Tessa through the city streets while Mithril dispatches the Arbalest to fight the Behemoth. With the help of Tessa and Kaname's Whispered abilities, Sousuke locates the Behemoth's weak spot and destroys it.

Sousuke, Kaname, and their friends visit the Narashino military festival during their summer break. At the festival's annual AS competition, Sousuke helps out the Narashino team (an element of the 1st Airborne Brigade), who lose to the Nerima team every year. His classmate, Shinji Kazama, a military otaku, also reconciles with his father, who is the Narashino team's commanding officer.

Sousuke is sent to Helmajistan after Gauron is found to be alive. He is temporarily assigned to an AS squad from Mithril's Indian Ocean corps in a mission to kill Gauron, but because of his young age, his presence is met with derision. They ignore Sousuke's advice and their first encounter with Gauron ends in disaster. They also commandeer a nuclear-armed ballistic missile Gauron was planning to sell on the black market.

Sousuke and the remaining team members take refuge in a cave hideout. However, he is unaware that an old friend from his child soldier days, Zaied, is fighting alongside Gauron. Zaied's insight into Sousuke's tactical planning gives him and Gauron the strategic advantage.

Kaname is nervous when Sousuke asks her to go to a secluded island with him, but is less enthused when the island turns out to be Mithril's base. An emerging situation forces Sousuke to immediately report to the Tuatha de Danaan with Kaname still in tow. When she arrives aboard the Tuatha de Danaan, she is surprised at the royal treatment she receives and is invited to the submarine's first anniversary party. 
19 "Engaging Six and Seven"

Melissa recounts to Tessa and Kaname how she recruited Kurz and Sousuke into the SRT. She said they were unlikely candidates while she was searching for new members; however, the combat skills they exhibit during a mission changed her mind. Sousuke later takes Kaname on a tour of the submarine.

Tessa shares with Kaname the nature of resonance between two Whispered. Meanwhile, the SRT prepares for a mission against terrorists led by Gauron, who survived the Helmajistan incident and is wreaking havoc at Palau's Berildaob island. During the battle, Gauron is captured, but Melissa ends up gravely injured.

Overcome with guilt over Melissa's condition, Sousuke lashes out at Kaname telling her that she is a burden. Overhearing the conversation, Kurz hits Sousuke telling him that Sousuke made Kaname cry and it is men like him that turn into bad husbands. Realizing his mistake, he looks for Kaname to apologize; however, with help from SRT traitors, Gauron takes control of the Tuatha de Danaan AI with a special program, holding Kaname, Tessa, and the command crew hostage. 
22 "Jack in the Box"
"Jakku in za Bokkusu" (ジャック·イン·ザ·ボックス)

To discredit Mithril, Gauron uses the Tuatha de Danaan to attack the USS Bunker Hill (CG-52), which is patrolling just nearby. Using resonance, Tessa communicates to Kaname a plan to regain control of the submarine, then creates a diversion that allows Kaname to escape. Gauron's men pursue her, but Sousuke and Kurz arrive in time to help. Kalinin visits the Bunker Hill to convince the U.S. Navy not to respond in force after Gauron fires two Harpoons at the ship. 
23 "Field of Giants"

Kaname connects herself directly to the Tuatha de Danaan computer system and re-programs it while Sousuke heads to the Tuatha de Danaan bridge. He rescues Tessa and the crew, but Gauron manages to escape. As Gauron is about to destroy the Tuatha de Danaan with his Venom AS, Sousuke activates his Arbalest. The U.S. Navy calls off the attack on the submarine. 
24 "Into the Blue"
"Intu za Burū" (イントゥ·ザ·ブルー)

Sousuke and Gauron fight each other within the confines of the Tuatha de Danaan hangar. As they struggle, Gauron activates his AS's self-destruct mechanism to destroy both himself and the Tuatha de Danaan. With Kaname's help, Sousuke jettisons Gauron's AS from the submarine just as it explodes. Back at Merida Island, Tessa sends home the remains of two SRT members killed during the takeover. 

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

The spinoff series comprises various stories in the short story collections. The second story of episode 1, "A Hostage With No Compromises" did not air in Japan because it involved child kidnapping when real-life child kidnappings were making headlines at that time. "A Fruitless Lunchtime" was broadcast in its place. "Hostage" and another story "Hostility Passing-by" were later released as OVAs.[1]

After Sousuke's encounter with a gang leaves its members disrespected, their leader decides to take Kaname hostage. Instead of giving in to their demands, Sousuke holds the gang leader's little brother hostage and proposes an exchange.

After Sousuke causes a panic at the school's bread stand, Sousuke and Kaname have to fill in for the stand's lunchtime duties, which raises the ire of the physical education teacher. He attempts to sabotage their bread, but he falls for Sousuke's booby traps, when Sousuke was expecting that someone would tamper the bread.

Sousuke forgets Kaname's notes at home and they make a frantic dash to retrieve them and return before lunchtime ends. Despite their tardiness, they find out that the notes were not needed since their teacher coincidentally fell sick.

3 "Summer Illusion of Steel"

During a day at the beach, Kaname becomes upset at Sousuke's insensitivity. When she goes off alone, she is asked to have tea with a boy who is enamored with her. Sousuke, however, believes that she was kidnapped and proceeds to rescue her from her apparent kidnappers.

During a field trip to the park, the class selects Sousuke to be the model for their art project. However, Sousuke misinterprets the modeling advice he receives from their art teacher, turning the assignment with his classmates into a game of life-and-death.

Kaname goes on a date with a former classmate to an amusement park while Sousuke and Kyoko follow her. Sousuke seems relieved that she's simply on a date until a drunken yakuza group threatens Kaname. Not wanting to reveal that he was following her, Sousuke comes to the rescue disguised as the amusement park mascot.

Sousuke and Kaname ask the school's karate club to vacate their dojo, which is slated for demolition. However, the club refuses to leave, challenging Sousuke to a duel where they'll leave if they lose. Sousuke defeats the club's members with relative ease until he faces the club's captain.

As a test of superiority, Sousuke and the karate club's captain compete to care for the injured school janitor; however, their overzealous efforts do more harm than good. The janitor tries to be patient, but finally goes berserk when they accidentally serve his prized koi pet to him for dinner.

Sousuke and Kaname investigate bizarre incidents where a masked predator attacks schoolgirls and gives them ponytails. With the help of a local policewoman, they set up a trap to catch the attacker using Kaname as bait.

To teach a stoic Sousuke the meaning of fear, Kaname takes him into a haunted hospital, but she becomes more scared than Sousuke. They learn that the haunted hospital rumor was perpetuated by the mother and son living there who wanted peace and quiet.

To prevent the school from disbanding the rugby team, Sousuke and Kaname help train them for an exhibition match against a rival school. Upon discovering that the players are timid and passive, Sousuke subjects them to grueling basic training to toughen them up, which helps them win the match.

The scene of Sousuke's grueling training of the rugby players by berating and abusing them to desensitize them to make them stronger references the boot camp scenes from Full Metal Jacket.

During a lull at the Mithril base after the events of the first season's final few episodes, Tessa decides to spend the time as an exchange student at Jindai High to learn more about school life. Sousuke, however, finds the stress of guarding her overbearing and collapses from fatigue. 
9 "A Goddess Comes to Japan (Part 2: The Hot Spring)"

Sousuke, Kaname, Tessa, Kurz, Melissa, and their friends travel to an onsen (hot springs) for some rest and relaxation before Tessa returns to Merida Island. Sousuke sets up a defensive perimeter and booby traps around the girls' bath, foiling the other boys' attempts to sneak a peek.

This episode has references to The Last Starfighter and Gundam SEED's SEED mode

Sousuke and Kaname discover that Ren Mikihara is a yakuza daughter whose members ask for their help to deal with a rival gang. Sousuke, in his mascot disguise, trains the yakuza members. When the rival gang kidnaps Kaname and Ren, Sousuke and his recruits rescue them wearing the special mascot AS. The episode was dedicated to Kinji Fukasaku, director of Battles Without Honor and Humanity, who had died earlier that year. 
11 "Uncontrollable Bluebird"

A lack of space for all of Jindai High's student organizations prompts a review of each group's numbers. Because they only have two members, the social science club agrees to give up their room through a contest to see which club can recruit the most members of the opposite gender. Sousuke participates, but his poor social skills fail to attract anyone to his club. Kaname, feeling sorry for Sousuke, decides to help out so he can avoid a bet he made with another club. 
12 "5th Period Hot Spot"

A classmate accidentally opens Sousuke's biohazardous container, causing a classroom quarantine. Sousuke later learns that the contents were not pathogenic, but destroys synthetic clothing instead. Relieved that there is no outbreak, he now fears the repercussions from his angry classmates.

In Nanjing, Amalgam kidnaps peace delegations from Northern and Southern China and fortify themselves in an underground tunnel beneath the Yangtze River. Mithril attempts a rescue in the tunnel's dangerous confines, but falls into Amalgam's trap.

Mithril is perplexed at how the enemy is able to follow their movements. Once they realize that their communications have been compromised, Tessa and Commander Andrei Kalinin give false orders to facilitate the rescue and turn the tables on Amalgam.

The SRT travels to Sicily to capture the traitor from the Nanjing operation. Sousuke has difficulties balancing work and school when he tries to have a phone conversation with Kaname and to drive a getaway vehicle at the same time. A mysterious AS also appears to help the team get away. Seeing the stress of his everyday duties, Mao decides to ask Sousuke about his own plans for the future. 
6 "Edge of Heaven"

Mithril attempts to learn more about the mysterious Amalgam organization. Sousuke and Kaname's relationship begins to blossom; however, the Mithril leadership forbids him from seeing her after his bodyguard duties are assigned to another agent.

Sousuke argues with his replacement, Agent Wraith, about the mission to protect Kaname. Kaname wonders why Sousuke has not been attending classes in days and starts to become worried. When she needs to see him after a chance encounter with Amalgam agent Xia Yu Lan, she finds his apartment vacant and he has disappeared.

After Sousuke arrives back at Merida Island, Tessa berates him for emotionally involving himself with Kaname and neglecting his other duties. Lt Belfangan Clouseau, the pilot of the AS seen in the Sicily operation, transfers to the SRT as its new commander. After he clashes with Kurz at the bar upon offending the memory of the SRT's dead comrades, Clouseau stages an AS duel to help Sousuke properly operate the Arbalest. 
9 "Her Problem"

Kaname confronts Agent Wraith about Sousuke's departure, but as she is about to get answers, Xia Yu Lan ambushes the two. Kaname outwits her pursuer until Leonard Testarossa, another Amalgam agent who is also Tessa's brother, shows up and kills Xia Yu Lan. He reveals that the assassin was a rogue agent acting outside of Amalgam's interests. 
10 "Hong Kong in Two"

Xia Yu Lan's twin sister, Yu Fan, hijacks a Venom AS to become an agent provocateur between the Northern and Southern Chinese Army units in Hong Kong. Sousuke and Melissa are deployed by Gavin Hunter to the area in a team of SRT/PRT personnel of East Asian origin to find the AS, but his feelings for Kaname nearly places the Mithril reconnaissance force in danger. After a tough sermon from Melissa touches a raw nerve, Sousuke deserts the team. 
11 "His Problem"

Sousuke continues to wander in Hong Kong and encounters a prostitute who looks very much like Kaname. Tessa is "forced" by Admiral Jerome Borda to deploy Clouseau, Melissa, and Kurz to the island after sightings of the Venom AS are confirmed.

Xia Yu Fan leads Sousuke to Gauron while she runs off to fight Clouseau, Melissa, and Kurz in Hong Kong as Northern and Southern China teeter on the brink of hostilities. Now crippled and about to die, Gauron explains the truth about Amalgam and taunts Sousuke by claiming to have killed Kaname because it changed him into someone weak. Enraged, Sousuke kills Gauron and gets out of the building just as a bomb under his bed explodes. Gates and his Amalgam team also arrive to kill Xia Yu Fan. Tessa launches the Arbalest despite Mithril's orders not to. 
13 "The Continuing Day By Day"

Still demoralized by Gauron's claims of killing Kaname, Sousuke still refuses to function until Kaname finally appears to get him back on his feet. Inspired by her presence, Sousuke pilots the Arbalest again to destroy Gates and his men. Kaname returns home to Japan. Sousuke faces the Mithril command, which grants his request to stay with Kaname even if his wages are reduced.

She encounters many of the crew members and discovers some unique traits of theirs. At the end of the day, she catches up to a departing Sousuke and tells him something very important. Surrounded by noise and being his usually block-headed self, Sousuke misinterprets her message.
