Lepers' Church

Lepers Church

Lepers' Church (Biserica Leproşilor in Romanian) is another important monument in the Târnava River bank of Sighișoara, Mures County in Romania. It is located In the extreme northwest of the old neighbourhood of Siechhof. The church has reduced proportions and it is believed that it was built in the XVth century. In 1507 next to the church starts to operate a shelter for people with leprosy. Since lepers were not allowed to enter the church, on the west side, just near the entrance, it was built a pulpit where the priest preaches to the patients from the churchyard.

Last substantial changes were made in late 19th century, when railways were built few meters from the church. On this occasion the wall was demolished completely, the territory around the church was elevated and the windows of the north face were obstructed.

In the altar of this church there is a beautiful painting „Jesus and the children” painted by L. Schuller in 1882 following a naturalistic manner.
