Laverton railway station is located on Werribee line, in the western Melbourne suburb of Laverton, Victoria, Australia. It opened on 1 July 1886.[1][2]

At the Up end of the station, the tracks diverge. Express Flinders Street trains take the direct double track route via the closed Galvin and Paisley stations, while local Laverton-Altona shuttle trains run on the single track route via Altona. Until June 2015, Geelong and Warrnambool line trains ran through the station, with these services now using the Regional Rail Link route via Wyndham Vale. The Western standard gauge line passes behind Platform 1.

History

In 1968, the side platform was converted to an island platform, as part of the duplication of the line to Werribee.[2] Control of all signals and points were transferred to the Newport signal box in 1986,[3] with the signal control panel remaining within the station building until 2009.[1] It was upgraded to a Premium station in 1998.[4]

On 1 October 1987, two Hitachi trains collided at the Up end of the station, near Laverton Junction, after an Up train overran the Altona loop, and collided with a Down train.[5][6]

In May 2008, the Victorian State Government announced, as part of the 2008/09 State Budget, that Laverton station would receive a $92.6 million upgrade, and would include a third platform. The budget also included a plan to triple one kilometre of existing double track, between the Altona line and the station.[7] The first section of the footbridge was installed in October 2009,[8] and the completed bridge was opened to the public on 9 February 2010.[9]

On the 'Express Route', between Laverton and Newport stations, Galvin station has been demolished, and Paisley station has had its platform access removed.
