Lauren Cherie Southern[4] (born June 15, 1995) is a Canadian libertarian and conservative activist, political commentator and writer for The Rebel Media, a Canadian online media company. Southern ran as a candidate for the Libertarian Party of Canada in the 2015 Canadian federal election.

Education and life

Southern was born in Surrey, British Columbia and is currently a resident of Toronto.[5] She studied political science at the University of the Fraser Valley.[6][7]

Media and political career

Political career

In 2015, Southern was a candidate in the Canadian Federal Election representing the Libertarian Party of Canada.[6] Party officials suspended her campaign over controversial issues, but she was reinstated after public outcry.[8]

Media activism

In June 2015, Southern's Rebel TV cameraman was shoved at the SlutWalk in Vancouver and Southern's protest sign "There Is No Rape Culture In The West" was torn up while reporting on the event. [9]

In March 2016 a protester in Vancouver poured a container of urine over Southern's head while she was speaking with other protesters at rally in Vancouver.[10] The incident resulted from statements Southern made about there being "only two genders".[11] Southern's Facebook account was blocked after she criticized Facebook policies in 2016.[12][13]

Southern initiated "The Triggering", whereby every March 9, the day after International Women's Day, Twitter users post taboo content in defense of free speech. Southern has expressed sympathy for the alt-right.[14]

In October 2016, Southern had her gender legally changed to male as part of a video produced for Rebel Media to show the ease of the new gender ID laws.[15]
