La Alcaidesa

La Alcaidesa is a residential and commercial seaside resort near Sotogrande, Spain (within the municipalities of La Línea de la Concepción and San Roque), in the Andalusian province of Cádiz. The resort was developed pursuant to a joint venture agreement between Costain Group PLC (a British company) and Banesto.[1]

Construction originally started in the 1990s. La Alcaidesa Inmobiliaria (the Costain/Banesto joint venture company) owns the land and there is an Architectural Control Committee who insisted that all the new building would conform to a common style.[2] Various developers have completed, and are in the process of completing, the building developments. Many buildings are still under construction. The golf courses, being two 18 hole courses, is said to include the only links course in Spain. There are various independent communities within La Alcaidesa, such as La Corona, a complex of modern townhouses. The village contains a couple of hotels. One exclusively serves the German market (Aldiana). The beach is linked to the beach in La Línea therefore it is possible to see Gibraltar (a British overseas territory).[2]

La Alcaidesa is only partially developed in accordance with its development plan. A small retail unit selling all essentials opened in March 2011 and the a pharmacy is on duty as well. A further mall has been constructed, but units remain vacant (as at August 2013).

Currently there is only one restaurant in the village - Bio Pizza, though there is a bar and restaurant on the beach in the summer months. Bio Pizza, is located in the main square and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. There are also two bars (also in the main square), The Ivy Wine Bar and Sol Mart, a mini-market. D"blanco, the beach bar, has seating inside and out and is open throughout the day and evening and serves a mixture of meat and fish dishes.

A fire station exclusively serving the village was built in 2008.
