Kay Hatcher served three terms as an Illinois State Representative, reflecting her belief that public service should be a limited commitment, not a career. She represented the greater Fox Valley in the 50th District, serving a 200 square mile area that encompasses both urban and rural residents. Representative Hatcher grew up on her family farm in central Illinois, and became involved as a community volunteer when her children started school. That volunteer service led to election to the Oswego School Board and the Kendall County Board. As an Economic Development Chair and Zoning Chair she helped guide one of the fastest growing counties in the United States as it doubled in population; working with regional leaders on the staggering pressures placed on both the human and physical infrastructure. As Forest Preserve President she worked with conservation organizations and local residents to preserve threatened natural areas and important waterways. Kay's political service has touched every facet of issue development. She served as President of the Illinois Federation of Republican Women, traveling throughout Illinois to train and encourage women of all ages to become active in the political process. As a graduate and member of the Board of Governors of the Illinois Lincoln Series she elevated that mentoring process to provide needed communications skills to the next generation of leaders. She receive her corporate communications training at Boston College's Carroll School of Management. This reflects a lifetime commitment to communications service; corporate spokesperson for Illinois Bell, community liaison for Senior Services Associates and community relations for the Fox Valley Park District, one of Illinois' most culturally diverse service areas. Her focus on more responsive government led to her service on both the Bipartisan Job Creation Task Force and the Government Reform and Accountability Committee. The Metro West Council of Government named Hatcher Legislator Of The Year for her collaborative and inclusive approach to legislative problem solving. She was awarded a competitive Fellowship from the Council of Midwest Government to study leadership tools with Canadian and Midwestern legislators. In her 6 years of service she also received legislative awards from numerous political and community organizations. Kay retired undefeated, having gained the respect on both sides on the aisle as the Republican Spokesperson on several influential House committees. Honors include YWCA Woman of Distinction, Business Journal LUCI (Leading Us in Commerce and Industry), Business Ledger Influential Woman in Business, Outstanding Woman in Government, Outstanding United Way Board Volunteer, Waubonsee College Distinguished Contributor, Illinois Crime Stoppers Volunteer Contributor of the Year, Fox Valley Project With Industry Distinguished Service Award, State of Illinois Making A Difference Award-Women's Empowerment, Farm Bureau ACTIVATOR Friend of Agriculture, Illinois Beef Producers Legislator of the Year and ABATE Motorcycle Freedom Legislator of the Year.
