Josh Ramsay is a Canadian singer, songwriter, producer, recording engineer, actor, and the lead vocalist of pop rock band Marianas Trench.[1]
Early life
Josh Ramsay went to high school at Magee Secondary School. He has dual citizenship in the US and Canada. He grew up in a family filled with music. His mother was a vocal teacher and his father owned a recording studio. Ramsay inherited that love of music by initially starting his own solo career at the age of 14. He decided later that he needed a supporting band. Ramsay got together with his sister, Sara Ramsay, and found two local musicians, Trevor Spilchen and Steve Marshall. Ramsay found the drummer, Ian Casselman, in a wanted ad in The Georgia Straight. They formed a band called Ramsay Fiction.
Ramsay and Webb had to search for new band members after Ramsay Fiction didn't work out. Ian was later a help in finding the bassist, Mike Ayley, as they had previously been in a band together. The four members formed the band named Fix Me to represent the struggles that Josh had experienced throughout high school, which was later changed to Marianas Trench and the name Fix Me was used as the title for the first album.[2]
Nearing the end of his high school years, Ramsay developed an addiction to heroin. In previous years, he had struggled with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and depression. He had begun to self-harm at around the age of 13.[3] Due to his drug addiction, Ramsay was kicked out of his high school.[4] He entered rehab, where he wrote several songs, such as Lover Dearest (originally a letter about his addiction), and Say Anything.
Marianas Trench
Ramsay formed the band Marianas Trench in 2001 and released their first self-titled EP, which contained songs that would appear on their limited edition video single, the Say Anything EP, their second EP Marianas Trench, and debut album Fix Me. The band later signed with 604 Records, through the assistance of owner Chad Kroeger and co-owner Jonathan Simkin.
He is also a successful producer and a songwriter for a wide array of artists including Carly Rae Jepsen, Nickelback, 5 Seconds of Summer, Simple Plan, Faber Drive, and Emily Osment. Ramsay works primarily out of "The Umbrella Factory," a studio he himself owns in Vancouver, BC. Josh plays 13 instruments, and often plays all of the instruments on the songs he produces for other artists.
Some of his most successful works of late include "Call Me Maybe," by Carly Rae Jepsen, which was nominated for song of the year at the 2013 Grammy Awards, "Hit Me Up" by Danny Fernandes, "Fallout," and "Haven't Had Enough" the latter two by Ramsay's own Marianas Trench.
"Ever After," the third studio album from Marianas Trench, went gold in its first week.
He provided vocals for the opening theme song for The Hub's Transformers: Rescue Bots.
In December 2012, it was announced that Ramsay was nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award for Song of the Year for co-writing Call Me Maybe with Carly Rae Jepsen and Tavish Crowe. Josh Ramsay also is featured in another Carly Rae Jepsen song called: Sour Candy.
On April 22, 2013, at the annual Juno Awards, Marianas Trench won the 2013 Juno Award for Group of the Year.
On October 23, 2015, their 4th album, Astoria, was released. This album includes the singles One Love, This Means War, & Who Do You Love.
