Life and work

Meckseper studied at Berlin University of the Arts in Berlin from 1986–1990, and completed her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 1992.[1]

Meckseper, also publisher of the FAT Magazine, addresses questions about the politics of power and the propagation of political ideas as commodity.[2] When the Bush administration began gearing up for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, she traveled around the world filming and photographing demonstrations against the war.[3]

She is represented by Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York, ARNDT in Berlin, Timothy Taylor Gallery in London, and Galerie Reinhard Hauff in Stuttgart.

Meckseper lives with fellow artist Richard Phillips[4] in Tribeca.[5] She maintains a studio in Chinatown, Manhattan.[6]

Exhibitions

Meckseper's work has been exhibited at important galleries and museums including the Oldenburger Kunstverein and Kunsthalle Nuernberg in Germany, the Museum fur Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, Switzerland, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, at the Royal Academy in London, and the 2005 Biennale d’Art Contemporain de Lyon in France. In 2007 a major retrospective on her work was shown at the Museum of Arts in Stuttgart.[7] In 2008 the New Photography: Josephine Meckseper and Mikhael Subotzky exhibition at Museum of Modern Art in New York exhibited her work with that of Mikhael Subotzky.[8]
