Joseph Whitney

Joseph Whitney (1928–2016) was a political and environmental geographer.[1][2] He was a professor of geography at the University of Toronto,[3] and studied Chinese culture and politics.[4][5]

Early life and education

Joseph Bevan Robertson Whitney was born in London, UK. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in geography in 1950.[2]

Career

Whitney taught geography at St. Mark's School in Hong Kong for twelve years.[6]

He then studied and conducted research at the University of Chicago,[7] earning a Ph. D. in 1969. Whitney then joined the geography department at the University of Toronto.[8][9] He served as department head from 1988 to 1993, after which he retired and became a Professor Emeritus.[2] He wrote about the political, economic and environmental geography of China.[10][11][12][13]
