Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai (Chinese: 蔡依林) has released thirteen studio albums, seven compilation albums, four remix albums, six live albums, and one cover album. In 1999, Tsai signed a recording contract with Universal Music Taiwan. The first released under the label was her debut album, 1019 (1999), which sold over 400,000 copies in Taiwan.[1] She followed the debut album with the sophomore release, Don't Stop (2000). The album sold over 40,000 copies in Taiwan, and became her best-selling studio album of her career to this date.[2] Her remaining contract with Universal ended with her third studio album, Show Your Love (2000), which sold more than 260,000 copies in Taiwan,[3] and her fourth studio album, Lucky Number (2001), which sold more than 150,000 copies in Taiwan.[4]
In 2002, Tsai signed a recording contract with Sony Music Taiwan. Her fifth studio album, Magic (2003), which was heralded as her comeback album, sold over 1.5 million copies in Asia with 360,000 copies sold in Taiwan alone, and made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan.[5][6] She released her sixth studio album, Castle (2004), which sold over 2 million copies in Asia with 300,000 copies sold in Taiwan alone, and the album made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan again.[7][8] In the same year, she also released a remix compilation, J9. Her seventh studio album, J-game, was released in 2005 and sold over 2 million copies in Asia with 260,000 copies sold in Taiwan alone, and the album also made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan.[8][9]
In 2006, Tsai signed a contract with Capitol Music Taiwan. The first released under the label was her eighth studio album, Dancing Diva (2006), sold over 2.5 million copies in Asia with 260,000 copies sold in Taiwan alone, and became the best-selling album of the year in Taiwan.[10][11] In the same year, she also released a remix compilation, Dancing Forever. In 2007, she released her ninth studio album, Agent J, which sold over 2.5 million copies in Asia with 200,000 copies sold in Taiwan alone and became the best-selling album of the year in Taiwan.[12][13] Her remaining contract with Capitol ended with her first cover album, Love Exercise, which was released in 2008. The album sold over 30,000 copies in Taiwan and became the best-selling Western-language album of the year in Taiwan.[14]
In 2008, Tsai signed a recording contract with Warner Music Taiwan. Her tenth studio album, Butterfly (2009), sold over 1 million copies in Asia with 190,000 copies sold in Taiwan alone, and made her the best-selling album of the year in Taiwan.[15][16] Myself was released as her eleventh studio album in 2010 and sold over 650,000 million copies in Taiwan.[17] The album made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan, while becoming her lowest-selling studio album of her career to this date.[17] Her twelfth studio album, Muse (2012), sold over 100,000 copies in Taiwan, and made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan.[18] In 2014, she released her thirteenth studio album, Play, which sold over 85,000 copies in Taiwan, and made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan.[19]
Tsai has sold more than 25 million copies in Asia and is recognized as one of the Asia's top-selling female recording artists of the 21st century.[20] Since Magic (2003), each of her studio albums at least made her the best-selling female singer of the year in Taiwan, and each of the three albums—Dancing Diva (2006), Agent J (2007), and Butterfly (2009)—even became the best-selling album of the year in Taiwan.[21]
