Jining Medical University

Jining Medical University (simplified Chinese: 济宁医学院; traditional Chinese: 濟寧醫學院; pinyin: Jìníng Yī Xué yuàn), is a public institution of higher learning in Jining and Rizhao, Shandong province, China. It was founded in 1952 as Jining Medical Assistant School (济宁医士学校), in 1958 it became Jining Medical College (济宁医学院), and from 1959 to 1986 it was renamed as 济宁医学专科学校 (Jining Medical College, Three-Year MD program), and it was changed to its current name 济宁医学院 again (Jining Medical College, Five-Year MD program) in 1987. Most departments offer courses in different Medical sciences.

Jining Medical University, established in February 1952, is a higher education institution in Shandong province. In January 1987, with the former State Education Commission's approval, it was named Jining Medical College (Five-Year MD program). In April 2008, the university gained great success in the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment of the State Ministry of Education.

There are two campuses in our university, namely, Jining and Rizhao campus. The total area of the two campuses is 1,382,000 square meters, including 433, 000 square meters of teaching and administrative building. The total property of the university is 1.436 billion yuan RMB. The value of the teaching apparatus and equipment is 150 million yuan RMB. The school library has a large collection of over 1.5 million books. The university consists of 15 schools and departments. It has 11 affiliated hospitals and 140 teaching bases. The university recruits students from 25 provinces of China. It has 16000 full-time undergraduate and junior students. There are over 30 majors and specialties of undergraduate education, covering 5 disciplines-medicine, science, engineering, management and literature-and one authorized first-level postgraduate education program on clinical medicine. It has begun to recruit international students since 2005, and has made an International Training Program of Nursing with the University of Memphis in the USA. Thus it has formed an education system, with undergraduate education as its priority and postgraduate education, continuing education, international exchanges and cooperation coexisting with each other. There are more than 1100 staff in our university, including 810 full-time teachers, over 300 professors and associate professors, more than 480 teachers with Ph.D. or M.S. Degree, and 446 visiting professors. More than 50 teachers have been awarded the titles of "National Labor Model", "National Labor Medal Winner", "National Outstanding Teachers", "Young and Middle-Aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions", "Experts Receiving Special Allowances from State Council", and "Taishan Scholars and Overseas Experts". It has a number of state-level specialties, provincial specialties, provincial level teaching teams, key disciplines of Shandong province, provincial level key laboratories, and achieved much accomplishments in the construction of national high-quality course, high-quality courses of Shandong province, provincial model course of bilingual teaching, province-level teaching demonstration centers. It also owns 34 institutes, including international cooperated laboratories, Behavioral Medicine Institute, Neurobiology Institute, Tumor Pathology Institute of Shandong province, etc. During the recent years, the university has got over 500 new science research projects of all types, among which there are projects of Natural Science Foundation of China and Natural Science Foundation of Shandong province, provincial science and technology research projects, national "eleventh five-year" support plan of Ministry of Science and Technology, sub-projects of "973", "863" programs and international cooperation programs. There are more than 3000 academic articles that have been published by domestic and international academic periodicals. The Behavior Medicine Branch of Chinese Medicine Association and Shandong Behavior Medicine Committee are linked up with the university. It also hosts core periodicals of China—Chinese Journal of Behavioral Medicine and Brain Science, and Journal of Jining Medical University—both are published domestically and abroad.

The university attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange, since it has established a long-term cooperative relationship with colleges, universities, hospitals and institutions in more than 10 countries and regions around the world, such as the University of Warwick in Great Britain, Karolinska Institute of Sweden, TZU CHI University of Taiwan, etc., and has conducted fruitful cooperation and exchanges in various fields such as teaching, scientific research, medicine, teachers' training, etc.

Jining Medical University is a medical center of southwestern Shandong province and nearby regions. In recent years, the rate of students passing national postgraduate entrance exams is considerably higher than many of other medical schools in China, and the graduate employment rate is above 92%, which is in the front rank among universities of the same level. The university has been given the title of "Provincial Civilized Unit" for the last 25 years in a row by the government of Shandong province, and has as well been granted the title of "Municipal Civilized Unit" by Jining Municipal Government for the 28 consecutive years. The honorary titles, such as "Provincial Civilized Campus","Province Level Outstanding University for Moral Education","National Advanced Unit in Social Practice" "Prize for the Outstanding Contribution to the Voluntary Service in the 11th National Games" and the like, have been conferred on the university.
