Jeffrey Brown (born in Boston, 1956 [1]) is an American author, producer, and broadcast journalist for PBS.

Early life and education

Brown grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts and attended Belmont High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in Classics from the University of California, Berkeley (1981), attended Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley from 1983 to 1985. He also holds a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (1986).

Career

Brown was a producer and writer for the Columbia University Seminars on Media & Society, an independent television production company headed by Fred W. Friendly. There he produced numerous programs for public television on a wide range of subjects, including foreign policy, ethics and the Constitution.

He joined the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour in 1988 and served as an economics reporter, national affairs producer and then senior producer, overseeing the program's coverage of a broad range of news topics. He became a correspondent for the NewsHour in the late 1990s, covering the news and the arts, and later served as a co-anchor of the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. His work as correspondent has taken him throughout the US and to many parts of the globe and has included interviews with many of the world's leading writers, musicians and other artists. Today he is senior correspondent and chief arts correspondent for the PBS NewsHour, based in Washington, and creator and host of "Art Beat", the NewsHour's online arts and culture blog.

Books

His book of poetry, "The News", was published by Copper Canyon Press in May 2015. In his introduction to the book, Robert Pinsky writes that "Jeffrey Brown has brought a remarkable, fresh kind of attention to questions of identity and presence, delusion and awareness...The News is more than a venture into art by someone prominent in another field. In these poems, an unconventional subject for poetry is dealt with from within, by a real poet."

Selected awards

His work has garnered an Emmy, five Cine Golden Eagle Awards, and other honors.

Personal life

Jeffrey Brown is married to Paula Crawford, an artist and professor at George Mason University. They have two children and live in Arlington, Virginia.
