Jaye Adams (born February 25, 1993), better known by his stage name Jazz Cartier, is a Canadian hip hop recording artist from Toronto.[1] He is best known for his mixtapes, "Losing Elisabeth", "Marauding in Paradise" and "Hotel Paranoia". He has twice been a longlisted nominee for the Polaris Music Prize, in 2015 for Marauding in Paradise,[2] and 2016 for Hotel Paranoia.[3][4]

Background

Born in Toronto, Ontario,[4] Cartier (whose stepfather worked as a diplomat) moved frequently in childhood with his family, living at various times in the United States, Barbados and Kuwait.[4] He credits the different types of music he was exposed to in these locations as all having had an influence on his own style as a hip hop musician.[5]

He was accepted to an art program at Columbia College Chicago in 2012 but, reluctant to move to a new city without anyone he knew, he returned to Toronto.[4]

Musical career

Cartier had worked on an early version of Marauding in Paradise as early as 2011,[4] but was not satisfied with the album. After moving back to Toronto, he began working with record producer Michael Lantz,[4] and released his first single "Set Fire" in 2014.[6] Performing in Toronto-area music venues, he quickly attracted attention[5] — his track "Switch" was regularly played at Toronto Raptors games by team DJ 4Korners,[4] and at a Toronto Red Bull Sound Select show in March 2015 he was introduced by celebrity rapper Kardinal Offishall.[4]

Marauding in Paradise was released in April 2015.[6][7]

On February 23, 2016, Jazz Cartier was announced as one of the performers at the 2016 Osheaga Festival.[8]

He was a shortlisted nominee for the 2016 SOCAN Songwriting Prize for his track "Dead or Alive".[1]
