Jamai is a city and a municipality in Chhindwara district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Jamai is located at 22°12′N 78°35′E / 22.2°N 78.58°E / 22.2; 78.58.[1] It has an average elevation of 748 metres (2454 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Jamai had a population of 22,426. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jamai has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 69%. In Jamai, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Religious importance

The first step to famous Chhota Mahadev pilgrimage is supposed to be located in Jamai (the place where the step is located is known as Junnardeo – a part of Jamai). Pilgrims cross seven hills (famously called Saat Pahadiyan) to reach Chhota Mahadev.

It is also famous for a religious fair held every year for 15 Days on "Maha Shivaratri".

After Diwali parv the famous fair khamra taal mela at near very beautiful place Nawegaon excepted it there are very beautiful places in Nawegaon like Gogali dev Hills, and beside it a very big Dam and bhutanala where there are many small waterfalls.
