JUCY is a tourism company which was founded in New Zealand. JUCY primarily deals in hiring cars and custom-built campervans. Additional to that the company also operates scenic cruises in Milford Sound and Snoozes in Auckland central and Christchurch New Zealand.[1][2][3][4]

History

JUCY was founded by Auckland brothers Tim and Dan Alpe. Chris Alpe, father of the brothers was a New Zealand campervan pioneer who founded Maui campervans in the 1980s.[5] The brothers also started by cleaning campervans for pocket money. In September 2001 they launched JUCY with 35 cars. The business was operated from a small garage in Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand. In 2003, JUCY launched their custom built campervans in New Zealand. JUCY also built their own manufacturing plant in Auckland and named it JUCY by design. Their staff research, design, manufacture and complete interior vehicle fit outs. JUCY employed boat builders to design and manufacture a fibreglass internal unit.

In 2008, JUCY launched a fleet of 100 JUCY compact campervans in Australia. Five years later in 2013, JUCY cars were introduced to Australia.[6] Today JUCY is the largest compact campervan operator in Australia with a fleet of over 500 vehicles.

In 2012, JUCY moved into the United States market. Initially, customers could only hire much larger motorhomes as the option to rent small converted vans did not exist. As of 2015, JUCY operates 200 campervans across the West Coast of United States in three locations; Los Angeles, San Francisco & Las Vegas.

In 2016, JUCY has more than 4000 rental cars and campervans across 16 branches in New Zealand, Australia and USA, 2 JUCY Snoozes in New Zealand, and 2 Cruise boats in Milford Sound New Zealand

Cruise boat

Late in 2007 JUCY ventured out to a New Zealand cruise business — Cruize Milford started in Milford Sound, New Zealand. JUCY purchased the Milford Adventurer boat with a capacity of 100 and rebranded to JUCY Cruise in 2011. JUCY then launched a new bigger 24m catamaran “the maiden of Milford in 2013” with a capacity of 200. When the Maiden went into service the Milford Adventurer was sold but still operates at Milford Sound. JUCY also has a JUCY Cruise coach operating between Te Anau, and Milford Sounds.[7]

In 2016 JUCY purchased a 2nd Cruise boat in the Milford Sound - The Gem of the Sounds. The Gem is a luxury cruise boat ready to set sail in 2017.

Accommodation

In, 2010 JUCY opened its first accommodation provider JUCY Hotel in Auckland Central. With both ensuite rooms and backpacker style rooms. JUCY Hotel was rebranded JUCY Snooze in 2015. A second JUCY Snooze opened Christchurch, NZ in 2016 with the pod style accommodation concept.[8]

Awards

JUCY won top accolades at the New Zealand International Business Awards (NZIBA) 2013 (administered by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise) – the only tourism business in the country to be recognised in the awards.[9][10] The company was named winner of the AUT Business School Most Innovative Business Model in International Business. JUCY was nominated in two categories; ANZ Best Business and AUT Business School Most Innovative Business Model in International Business, and was named joint winner along with NZ Merino.[11]
