In This House of Brede is a novel by Rumer Godden published in 1969.

Synopsis

The novel is a portrait of religious life in England that centers on Philippa Talbot, a highly successful professional woman who leaves her life among the London elite to join a cloistered Benedictine community. It begins in 1954, as Phillipa leaves her comfortable life to enter the monastery, Brede Abbey, through her final vows in the changing post-Second Vatican Council environment.

Cultural references

The novel's setting, Brede Abbey, is modeled on real-life Stanbrook Abbey.[1] The novel served as the base for a 1975 TV film of the same name, starring Diana Rigg.[2]
