"If You" is a single recorded by South Korean group Big Bang. It was released digitally on July 1, 2015 by YG Entertainment, as the fifth single from MADE Series, and the first from D.

Background

The first poster of D was released on June 26, with the name of the song, and the date of album release.[1] The song was released on July 1.[2] The release is supported by a live countdown on Naver Starcast on 30 June, 11 pm.[3]

It was announced that the song will have no music video, unlike the other singles that Big Bang released this year. YG Official revealed to Star News, "The reason why it does not have a music video is because since BIGBANG’s debut in 2006, "If You" is their saddest song ever. "If You" is a track that will touch you emotionally. A music video wasn't shot so that you can focus on the music and lyrics only.".[4]

This is the first song in which all of the members of Big Bang sing, as typically before T.O.P and G-Dragon would rap.

Commercial performance

"If You" sold 308,120 digital copies in the first week on Gaon Chart, making it the fourth-best first week sales in 2015, and peaked at number one in Digital Chart, it charted at number two on the BGM Chart, four on the Streaming Chart with total 4.871 million streams and number 22 on the Mobile Chart.[5][6][7][8] On the second week, the song fall to number four in Digital Chart, no.7 in Download chart with total 130,714 sales, and raised to number two in the Streaming Chart with total 5.459 streams.[9][10] The song topped Gaon monthly digital chart for month July with total 627,808 sales and 21.247 million streams.

The song charted at number two on the World Digital Songs.[11]

Critical reception

Billboard talked about "If You", saying that it was the "band's most instantly striking pieces in years."[12] OSEN called it "is the saddest song ever in BIGBANG's history"[13][14] G-Dragon received good reviews for his writing, "G-Dragon shows of his formidible [sic] songwriting chops, evoking the complexity of "Lies" or "Haru Haru"[15]

Tablo from Epik High called "If You" breathtaking,[16] Yang Hyun-suk named "If You" the saddest song that BIGBANG has ever made.[17]

The song ranked seventh as the best 20 Korean singles in 2015 in Taiwan.[18]
