Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa

"Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa" is a popular ghazal, especially in the renditions, sung by Ghulam Ali.^[1][2] It is written by the Akbar Allahabadi. It is composed in Raag Darbari Kanada. This ghazal was for the first time used in a Pakistani film Aap Ka Khadim which was directed by Wazir Ali, Music was composed by Khalil Ahmed and sung by Mehdi Hassan but the lyrics were credited to Tasleem Fazli as he penned the lyrics of that film.^[3] Later Ghulam Ali adopted it with same basic music composition and made it popular.

Writer's historical and cultural context

Akbar Allahabadi's song is clearly about the pleasures of imbibing alcohol, it is claimed ^[4] that its genesis is in the social context of the British Raj in India, at a time when the Muslim League had begun to exert its independent approach to interacting with the British, against the wishes of the Congress. Some Muslims, including Akbar Allahabadi, hoped for Hindu-Muslim unity. This caused others to suggest that he had been given alcohol by the Hindus. (Muslims are forbidden to drink alcohol.) His ghazal was intended as a response to those insinuations.
