Hilperton is a village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is separated by only a few fields (the Hilperton Gap) from the northeastern edge of the town of Trowbridge and is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from Trowbridge town centre.
There are three main parts of the village:
- The old quarter, including the church, Hill Street, and the pub.
- To the south, large areas of housing constructed from 1997, including Paxcroft Mead, Castle Mead and Lacock Gardens; these districts are sometimes mistaken as suburbs of Trowbridge.
- To the east are Devizes Road, Stourton Park and Paxcroft (a small industrial hamlet).
- Also there is a new relief road for Hilperton under construction (as of October 2015)
In the west of the parish is the village of Hilperton Marsh which has a petrol station and store, and is adjacent to the village of Staverton (a separate parish) and the Canal Road Industrial Estate (part of Trowbridge). In the north is the rural hamlet of Whaddon.
Local government
Hilperton is an ancient civil parish with its own elected parish council. It is in the area of Wiltshire Council unitary authority, which is responsible for all significant local government functions.
An electoral ward of the same name exists. The ward stretches from Hilperton north to the edge of Trowbridge and north east to Whaddon. The total population of this ward taken from the 2011 census was 4,967.[2]
Buildings
The small Church of England parish church of St Mary at Whaddon is Grade II* listed.[3]
Hilperton's parish church of Saint Michael and All Angels dates from the Middle Ages but was "restored" in 1852 by T.H. Wyatt.
Hilperton House dates from the 18th century and is Grade II* listed.[4]
Amenities
Paxcroft Mead has several green recreational spaces and a small shopping area with a Budgens supermarket, a Chinese takeaway, a fish and chip shop, a carpet store, a Mind charity shop, a hairdresser and an estate agent, also a pub restaurant, The Red Admiral. The old quarter has a free house pub, the Lion and Fiddle, on Devizes Road. The post office and general stores in the old quarter was closed in 2004, though a petrol station (with a small shop) remains in place. The village hall on Whaddon Lane is the social hub of the older part of Hilperton, and the adjoining football pitch is home to Hilperton United FC. Trowbridge Rugby Football Club is at Paxcroft.
Landmarks
Hilperton is home to a mid-18th century limestone village lock-up known as The Blind House,[5] a set of stocks,[6] a green village pump manufactured by Lee Howl,[7] a milestone giving directions to three nearby towns,[8] and two elaborate Paxcroft Mead signs constructed in 1997.[9][10] There are plaques commemorating a thousand years since Hilperton's entry in the Domesday Book,[11] the village's win as "The Best Kept Village 2012",[12] and a 1994 plaque commemorating the centenary of parish councils. The Paxcroft Mead Country Park is also home to three "People in the Park" benches, one of which commemorates the tenth anniversary of the Paxcroft Mead Community Centre.[13]
Waterways
The Bristol Avon forms part of the northern boundary of the parish. Semington Brook flows through the parish to its junction with the Avon.
The Kennet and Avon Canal crosses the rural section of the parish and forms the western boundary of Hilperton Marsh, where there is a marina.
