Hariwan is a Municipality in Sarlahi District in the Janakpur Zone of south-eastern Nepal. The formerly village development committee was transformed into municipality merging the existing village development committees i.e. Atrouli, Sasapur, Ghurkauli and Hariwon on May 18, 2014.[1][2] At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 11,912 people living in 2276 individual households.[3]

Hariwan is home to the one of the most famous D.A.V Shushil Kediya Vishwa Bharatiya Eye Hospital in this region. Namuna Hospital was first Emergency Hospital for the Hariwon, Nawalpur, Lalbandi, Karmaiya region. Hariwan Hospital ranks second position for the opening of hospitals in Hariwon.

Industries

Hariwan is the home of the Indu-Shankar Chini Udhog (Sugar Mill) Ltd. and Brijulal Chamal Udhog (Rice Mill) Hulas Ltd and is one of the main business centers of the District.

Country's leading sugar producing industry, Indu-Shankar Chini Udyog was established in 1984 at Hariwon, Sarlahi of Nepal. The plant produces high quality sugar and its bi-product with a production capacity of 36,650 MT.

Hariwan has a permanent market area which houses shops for Garment, Hardware, Cosmetics, Departmental Stores, DVD rentals, Travel Agencies, Grocery shops, Hospital, Co-operative Finance Companies, a couple of major banks and their ATMs. One can also use internet facilities in the market area. There is a bi-weekly market every Wednesday and Saturday. These are the days when most people from the surrounding areas come for the weekly shopping of groceries. With each passing day the number of shops in the market are growing along with the quality and variety of products that they offer.

Travel & Transports

The most important National Highway (Mahendra Rajmarg) in Nepal passes through Hariwan Municipality, the East-West Highway(45804) 305 km west to Mechi. Due to this most long route buses plying to major hubs in the country like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Birgunj, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj Hetauda pass through Hariwan and so one can easily catch a bus to all the major parts of the country from Hariwan. For local transportation, Vikram Tempo's, Tata Magic Ace, KIA & Mitsubishi micro buses & along Battery powered Rikshaws (Mayuri) are popularly used.

Nearest airport is the Simara Airport which is approximately 65 km from Hariwan. We can get flights to major destinations in Nepal from this airport. Nearest railway station in Nepal is the Janakpur railway station which has only one train bound to Jayanagar in Bihar,India. The another00000 nearest railway station in India is the Raxaul Junction which has trains bound to places like New Delhi, Kolkata, Gorakhpur, Mumbai in India.
