Hüseyin Hilmi Bey or İştirakçi (Socialist) Hilmi (born 1885? İzmir-16 November 1922 İstanbul death) one of the early Turkish socialists, old Liberal. Founder and first General Chairman of Ottoman Socialist Party and Socialist Party of Turkey.

Early years

Hüseyin Hilmi born in İzmir. Birth date of Hilmi doesn't knowing clearly. Hilmi worked as civilian police in İzmir.

Liberal Hilmi

In İzmir, Hilmi published an newspaper named Serbest İzmir (Free İzmir or Liberal İzmir) on 1907. He was a supporter of Ahrar Party and Prince Sabahaddin.

İştirakçi Hilmi

He inherited from his father and went Romania in this years. In Romania, Hilmi was affected by labour movements and he was becomes socialist. Hilmi and Anarchist Baha Tevfik published İştirak on 13 February 1325 (1909). With this, Hilmi's liberal life is death. Now, Hilmi knowing with İştirak Newspaper. And he called İştirakçi Hilmi.

Ottoman Socialist Party era

Ottoman Socialist Party (Turkish: Osmanlı Sosyalist Fırkası) founded by Hüseyin Hilmi, Namık Hasan, İbnül Tahir İsmail Faik, Baha Tevfik and Hamit Suphi on August 1910. Party isn't a normal socialist party. Party doesn't want proletariat state. Also OSF doesn't interest with socialism. Party becomes supporter of liberal ideas of Prince Sabahaddin. Party was closed in 1912. After the Assassination of Mahmut Şevket Pasha, Hilmi are exiled to Sinop on 1913.

Ottoman Socialist Party in Paris Branch

Paris Branch of OSF founded by Doctor Refik Nevzat in 1910s. After the closing of party in İstanbul and exiling of Hilmi, Refik Nevzat is becomes only representative person of the party. He published 3 brochures for OSF named Siyaset-i Hazıra-i Meş'ume (Current Sinister Politics), Sosyalizm ve Rehber-i Amele (Socialism and Vanguard Workers) and Haraç Mezat Satıyoruz (Auctions Sell Tribute).

Socialist Party of Turkey

After the Armistice of Mudros (Turkish: Mondros Mütakeresi) Hüseyin Hilmi returns back to İstanbul. On 20 February 1325 (1919), Socialist Party of Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye Sosyalist Fırkası, TSF) founded by Hüseyin Hilmi and another 13 person. [not 1] Unlike Ottoman Socialist Party, Socialist Party of Turkey in a position more to the left. Also TSF is a member of the Second International.

Strikes and TSF

On 1920s, in İstanbul Ottoman worker class starts so many strikes. For occupation of country, poor wages and other reasons workers launched several strikes. In this atmosphere, TSF becomes vanguard of İstanbul workers.

Second Congress and dissolution

On 31 October 1920 Party prepares second congress. In this congress Hüseyin Hilmi becomes founder and unchangeable leader.[not 2] With this, opposition tries to exile Hilmi and friends. But Hilmi and Hilmi's friends survive this opposition. With then, the opposition splits from party and founds Independent Socialist Party. After the split, party lose power.

Third Congress and exiling of Hilmi

On 8 March 1922, party prepares third congress. In this congress, Hilmi and supporters exiled from party. The party was a democratic again but it doesn't change anything. Party was dissolved.

Killing of Hilmi

On 16 November 1922 Hüseyin Hilmi killed by a police officer Ali Haydar. In the first, he said Hilmi is trying to rape himself so then he kills the Raper Hilmi. But he change his evidence after and he said Hilmi is killed by unknowing mans.
