Gona Gannareddy (1262-1296AD),[1] sometimes spelled Gonaganna Reddy, was a ruler of the Vaddemani Kingdom during Kakatiya dynasty in the Deccan Plateau and one of the few ruling queen Rani Rudrama Devi in Indian history. He is son of King Gona Budda Reddy who contributed Ranganatha Ramayanam as Dwipada kavyam in Telugu Language.[2] He conquered Raichur and constructed a fort during the rule of Kakatiya dynasty.[3] A 400-page Kakatiya Charithrathmaka Navala, history book was written by Adavi Baapiraju in 1946.[4]

Early life

After the death of Ganapthi deva, Rudrama Devi became the queen of the Kakatiya. All the sub kings (samatharaja) kings decided to capture queen. At this time Gona Gannareddy went under cover lived in forest, started cleaning up enemies who are inside the kingdom and attackers from outside as they all have to come the forest. He gave great protection to Kakatiya Kingdom, stood as a backbone to Rudhrama Devi. Gona Gannareddy played a vital role during King Pratapa Rudra ruling. He conquered Raichur and constructed a fort. He supported queen Rudrama Devi in every battle. Some named him as thief (until Rudram Devi announced him as the supporter of Kakatiyas).

One of his biggest fight against Lakkubhai in the Nallamalla forest, Gonna reddy reached them as devotees of Lord Siva and attacked the army. Later captured Lakkubhai Reddy and handed over to Rudhrama Devi.

With the help of Gannareddy, Rudhrammadevi won another war battle against Mahadevudu. This battle helped Rudhrama Devi become a powerful female warrior and ruler.

Rule

Gona Kings are the feudatories of Kakatiyas and ruled the Vardhamanapuram. Gona Buddha reddy and Gona Gannareddy are the great kings who helped to Kakatiya Kings. The main centres of this Kingdom are Vardhamanpuram (Vaddemin of Bijinapally Mandal) and Budapuram (Bhoothpur).[5] Gona Gannareddy was great warrior, he won every battle he went. He is also great ruler. His courage and honesty towards Kakatiyas gave him the highest place in the Indian history.

Film maker Gunasekhar made a Telugu language Gona Ganna reddy character played by Allu Arjun is glorified once again to the Telugu community his hard work, movie on the life of Rudrama Devi the warrior queen., though some parts of the movie were fictionalised[6]
