Richardson was selected in the seventh round (50th overall) of the 1965 AFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent two years on the taxi squad, before making the team in 1967. His most productive season was 1968, where he made 22 receptions for 494 yards, 5 touchdowns and a 22.5-yard average per reception.

On July 31, 1972, he was traded to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a fourth round draft choice (#97-Ken Hutcherson).[2]

In the 1972 preseason, Richardson became expendable with the play shown by rookie wide receivers Cliff Branch and Mike Siani.[3] On September 11, 1977, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fourth round draft choice (#93-Morris Bradshaw).[4]
