Glasgow University is a basketball club based in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The senior men's team compete in Division 1 of the Scottish Basketball Championships.

History

The club was formally affiliated as a section of the Glasgow University Sports Association in March 1947. In its first few years of affiliation, the basketball club performed well, winning the league for three years running and producing international players in J. R. Davis, D. Quayle and J. Hutchison, although the club's best player was arguably Clayton Roberts, an American. In the 1952-53 season, devoid of their American and Canadian stars, the team fell to the bottom of the league. However, victory was again achieved in the 1961-62 and the 1975-76 seasons when the club rose to the top of the league once again. Fifty-five years on from the original affiliation with GUSA, the club has gone through much transformation, expansion and growth, with a women's club also been added to the mix.

University Competitions

The last few years have arguably been the most successful in the club's history. Since 2011, the University of Glasgow fields five basketball teams in the BUCS Championships, three from the Men's and two from the Women's Basketball Club respectively. The Glasgow University Men's Basketball Club (GUMBC) in particular is currently participating with its 1st, 2nd and 3rd Teams in the Scottish 1A, the Scottish 3A and the Scottish 5A League respectively. In 2010, its 1st Team won their first BUCS title in over twenty-five years and secured a place in the BUCS Northern Premier Conference, becoming the first team in Glasgow's history to reach this standard.
