G. Satheesh Reddy is an Indian Aerospace Scientist and presently Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri[4] (SA to RM)[5] and Director General, Missiles and Strategic Systems.[6][7] Earlier, Satheesh served as Director of the Research Centre Imarat ([8] RCI) a key laboratory of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam[9] Missile Complex,[10] Defence Research and Development Organisation and an advanced centre for design, development and delivery of avionics systems for missiles and other applications.[11][12][13] Reddy pioneered many technological developments for Indian Missiles and has made significant contributions towards successful flight testing of the country's maiden intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Agni-V mission.[14][15] In June 2015 he was appointed scientific adviser to the defence minister of India.[16]

Satheesh led the RCI laboratory and as Programme Director, successfully spearheaded the development of Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) programme which scored a perfect hat-trick in its first three consecutive missions. Hon'ble President and Hon'ble Defence Minister of India extended their best wishes for the MRSAM team.[17] Satheesh praised his entire team behind the successful mission and said “It is a quantum jump in air defence capability, the missile successfully intercepted a manoeuvring air-breathing target mimicking an attacking combat aircraft. "It was a perfect launch achieving all the mission parameters”.[18]

Recognition

Satheesh is a fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation in London, the first from India.[13] He is a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a foreign member of the Academy of Navigation and Motion Control, Russia,[19] a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering[20] and an honorary fellow of the Computer Society of India.[21]

Satheesh received the Homi J. Bhabha Memorial Award of the Indian Science Congress Association for 2013–14.[22] In 2015 he was the first Indian recipient of the Silver Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society.[23] He has been conferred with National Systems Gold Medal,[24] Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Award of the Institution of Engineers (India),[25] IETE B.V. Baliga Memorial Award for his contribution towards planning, design, development, production and timely delivery of critical avionics systems and diversified navigation technologies[26] and Systems Society of India Vikram Award for realisation of Systems of National importance.[27][28]

Satheesh Reddy has been selected for the The Institution of Engineers (India) – Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Award for Engineering Excellence-2015,[29] the joint award established by the IEI (India) and the IEEE, USA instituted first time in India to give global recognition to engineering contribution par excellence in the country.[30] The Jury after declaring the Satheesh as the winner of this award said that "the scale and impact of Satheesh's contributions to Navigation and Avionics technologies, and the development of critical technologies for self-reliance in national security have been considered as outstanding, and the Jury is confident that the conferment of this Award on Dr. Satheesh Reddy would inspire engineering practitioners to dedicate themselves to the application of engineering for societal needs and advancement of humanity."[31]

As a Navigation expert, Satheesh made significant contributions to Indian Defence programmes and has won the Young Scientist Award, DRDO Scientist of the Year Award[32] and the prestigious Agni Award for Excellence in Self reliance as a team leader for indigenous development of world class and highly accurate Ring Laser Gyro (RLG)-based Inertial navigation System (RINS).[33]

In 2015 he received Honorary Degrees of Doctor in science from Amity University, Noida,[34] SASTRA University,[35] Thanjavur, GITAM University, Hyderabad,[36] KL University, Guntur[37] and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada.[38][39][40] Reddy was chosen for the first Institution of Engineers - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (United States) joint award for engineering excellence.[41] Satheesh is Chairman of Aeronautical Society of India, Hyderabad and has initiated the international collaborations for promotion of Aerospace sector in India.[42] He has delivered the Convocation address at the prestigious Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering.[43] Satheesh during his Convocation address at GITAM University[44] emphasised that research oriented defence studies in the universities will play a major role in the development of advanced defence technologies.[36]
