Fred Sherman (May 21, 1932 – September 16, 2013) was an American scientist who pioneered the use of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model for studying the genetics and molecular biology of eukaryotic cells.[1][3][4]

Career

In 1970 Sherman co-founded with Gerald Fink the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's course in yeast genetics and molecular biology, which for many years he co-taught.[5][6]

Awards and honours

Sherman was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1985,[7] and was awarded the Genetics Society of America's George Wells Beadle Medal in 2006 for "distinguished service to the field of genetics and to the genetics community."[2][8]
