Fred Martin (Idaho politician)

Fred S. Martin (born in Tyhee, Idaho)^[2] is a Republican Idaho State Senator representing District 15.

Education

Martin graduated from BYU–Idaho (Ricks College) and graduated from the Institute of Religion at Utah State University (USU) Logan, Utah. Martin also completed the Real Estate Management program College of Business at USU. Martin also attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. He graduated from the Medical Training Center at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, and Non-Commissioned Officer Training School.

Early career

Fred has been a teacher, educator, principal, businessman and CEO. For over 20 years Martin was owner, president, and CEO of Satellite Systems Inc. with offices throughout Idaho, the western and southern United States. Martin taught Religious Education, U.S. History, and Business Economics. When Martin was with Satellite Systems, Inc. the dealership was in the top 100 nationwide in sales volume out of 15,000 dealers.^[1]

Militiary service

Martin was a medic in the Idaho National Guard and was a member of the United States Army Reserves. Martin received his basic training at Fort Polk Louisiana, his AIT (Advanced Individual Training) at the Medical Training Center at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Martin graduated from Non-Commissioned Officer Training school at Idaho State University. He was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard of Idaho in 1974 and from the United States Army in 1977.

Election

Fred S. Martin won re-election in the November 8, 2016 General election with over 10,000 votes (10,580) with 56.3% of the vote over Democrat Laura Metzler. Martin was unopposed in the May 17, 2016 Primary election. In the November 4, 2014 General election Martin received 58% of the vote, Richard Keller received 42%. In the May 20, 2014 Republican Primary Martin received 61% of the vote over Diego Rodriguez at 39%. In 2012 with Republican Senator John C. Andreason retiring, Martin was unopposed in the May 15, 2012 Primary election ^[3] and won the November 6, 2012 General election with almost 10,000 votes (9,545) against Democratic nominee Betty Richardson (former U.S. Attorney for Idaho).^[4]

Martin was an aide to a United States Congressman and Bureau Chief, Executive Director for Citizens for Local Government, Sergeant at Arms Idaho State Senate, President of the Idaho Student Association, a Republican Precinct Committeeman, Republican County Vice-Chairman, Executive board of the Alumni Association, "Man of the Year", and Student Body President at Ricks College.

In the Idaho Senate Martin moved into leadership serving as the Co-Chairman of the Joint Purchasing Laws Interim Committee (2015–16), Vice-Chairman of the Commerce and Human Resources Committee, and Vice-Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee (2015).

Martin is very active in his church, serving in the North Carolina-Virginia Mission working mainly with the Lumbee Indians in Pembroke, North Carolina. Martin was a Seminary teacher and principal in the Church Education System. He also taught U.S. History and Business Economics at the high school level.

Personal life

Fred Martin grew-up on the Fort Hall Indian reservation north of Tyhee, Idaho. Martin is a fourth generation Idahoan (going back to John William Martin of Rexburg about 1882 and George Fredrick Martin of American Falls and Salmon). He is married and the father of 6 children with 16 grandchildren (all living in Idaho). His wife is Darla (Miner) formerly of St. Anthony, Idaho (born in Burley, Idaho). Darla's father, the late Doyle C. Miner, was a city councilman, a state representative (District 28) who served as Co-Chairman of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee, Chairman of the Ada County Commissioners, Republican nominee for State Treasurer, and the Director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy. He also was co-owner of a chain of Drug Stores in southeastern Idaho (Thriftway Drug).
