Fred G. Barrett (October 2, 1914 - July 3, 1984) was a municipal politician who served as mayor of the city of Gloucester, Ontario from 1982 until his death at the age of 69.[1]
He was born in Leitrim, in the-then Township of Gloucester and lived his entire life in the farmhouse where he was born.[1] Barrett attended Glebe Collegiate but left high school at 17 to work on the family farm.[2] He followed his father (also named Frederick) in the agricultural profession and prospered as a dairy farmer. Known for his folksy manner, he served on Gloucester council off and on for twenty years, finally winning the mayor's office.[1] He married Doris E. Kemp (1922-1988). Barrett ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal in the provincial riding of Carleton East.[2] The former Leitrim Arena was renamed in his honour.[3]
He died from liver cancer at the family farm.[2]
