Evin Crowley (born 5 December 1945) is a Northern Irish actress. She was born in Bangor, County Down. She started acting as an amateur at a small theatre, later to become the Lyric Theatre, in Belfast, before later being chosen to play the role of Maureen in David Lean's Ryan's Daughter (1970).

Career

She was a character actress with promise. Before her on-screen role, she was with the Lyric Players, appearing on stage from the mid to late 1960s. In 1970, she made her television debut in The Sinners, playing the part of Sister Magdalene.[1] Also in the same year, she played the part of Moureen in the David Lean directed Ryan's Daughter that starred Sarah Miles and Robert Mitchum.[2][3] Her role was memorable. Her character was one of the mischief making village hussy.[4][5]

Notable television roles include the scullery maid Emily in Upstairs, Downstairs.[6] She was critically praised for her performance in the final episode (first series), wherein Emily falls for a footman from another home and is rejected by him. Evin's character is scolded by the cook she works under for being remiss in her duties. Despairing of hope, she hangs herself. Other roles include Biddy Hall in the joint 1975 BBC and ABC televisualisation of the life of Ben Hall.
