The Embassy of Belarus in London is the diplomatic mission of Belarus in the United Kingdom.[1] It is situated just south of Hyde Park between the Embassy of Azerbaijan and the Embassy of Mongolia.[2]
Britain and Belarus established diplomatic relations in 1992 shortly after Belarus regained independence;[3] a consular-general was set up in 1993 which was then upgraded to a full embassy in 1994.[4]
The Belarusian diaspora in the UK provided the newly established consular-general and embassy with a building at 1 St Stephen's Crescent. However, after the establishment of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko and the controversial referendum held in 1995, which cancelled the pre-Soviet state symbols of Belarus and introduced Russian as a state language, the embassy was asked to leave the building.[5]
In 2010 protests was held by people opposed to the government of Alexander Lukashenko[6] and also by opponents of Internet censoship in Belarus.[7]
