Ellenabad, previously known as Kharial, is a city with a municipal committee in the Sirsa district of the state of Haryana, India. It is located to the north of the Ghaggar-Hakra River and serves as a port of entry into the state of Haryana. As of January 2001 the city had a population of approximately 33,000 and is a constituency of Haryana Vidhan Sabha.[1]

Etymology

Ellenabad was founded during the British colonization by Hisar commissioner Robert Hutch. The commissioner's wife, Madam Ellena, gave birth to a child in the town of Kharial. Hutch renamed the town Ellenabad as a gesture of appreciation for the accommodations provided during his wife's pregnancy.[2]

Transport

Ellenabad is connected by rail on the HanumangarhSadulpur railway route.[3] It is 43 kilometres (27 mi) from Hanumangarh and 136 kilometres (85 mi) from Sadulpur . It is planned to be connected to Sirsa by train. Ellenabad is situated on state highway number 23 and is 42 kilometres (26 mi) from Sirsa, the district headquarters. Ellenabad also administrates small villages like Mojukhera.Ellenabd mast & top villages in Kishanpura in all factorys etc.

Demographics

The Ellenabad Municipal Committee has population of 36,623 of which 19,441 are males while 17,182 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 4478 which is 12.23% of total population of Ellenabad (MC). In Ellenabad Municipal Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 884 against state average of 879. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Ellenabad is around 862 compared to Haryana state average of 834. Literacy rate of Ellenabad city is 75.19% lower than state average of 75.55%. In Ellenabad, Male literacy is around 81.80% while female literacy rate is 67.75%.

Ellenabad has an evenly distributed Sikh and Hindu population, with small Muslim and Christian communities.

Economy

Ellenabad's primary source of income is agriculture. Its grain market provides support to farmers from surrounding villages and daily trains connect Ellenabad to New Delhi, Jaipur, and Sri Ganganagar.

Education

Saraswati High School is the famous quality education institute founded by Late Sh. Balbir Singh Saini. In the matric exam of the session 2015-16 it secured the second position in the State Haryana. The other most notable schools in the city are Sir Chhotu Ram Jat Senior Secondary School, Sarvodaya Shiksha Sadan,[4][5] Sarvpalli Public School,[6] Ch. Harpal Singh Convent School (H.C.S.),[7] Satluj Public School and C.R.D.A.V. School.[8] These are well known for their English and Mathematics departments.

Health care

Nearby hospitals include the Civil Hospital and the Janata Hospital.[9]
