Electronic Records Archives
The Electronic Records Archives (ERA) is an office of the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) which was officially established in 2000.[1]
Initial planning and development of ERA began in 1997.[2] The President and Congress supported ERA with appropriations.[1]
In 2008, ERA accepted its first records from four pilot agencies.[1] These agencies were:
- Department of Commerce, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).[3]
- Department of the Navy, National Oceanographic Office (NAVO).[3]
- Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).[3]
- Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).[3]
In January 2009 it began to take in the electronic records of George W. Bush’s White House.[1]
NARA entered into partnerships with private companies to digitize thousands of traditional paper records. In time, this digitized material will be made available through the ERA.[1]
