Doctor Who: Series 3 is a soundtrack album that was released on 5 November 2007,^[1] containing incidental music that was used throughout the third series of the BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The music was composed by the British musical director Murray Gold and was orchestrated by his collaborator Ben Foster who had previously worked with him on the films Alien Autopsy, I Want Candy and most recently Frank Oz's Death at a Funeral.^[2]

The album's independent record label is Silva Screen Records who were responsible for the release of previous Doctor Who soundtracks, in collaboration with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Material

The BBC had stated on their Doctor Who website that they were planning a release of a second soundtrack after the end of the fourth series, but since they were inundated with requests for an earlier release, they were "contemplating one". This release would appear to be the one referenced. Therefore, this volume features only one series' worth of material rather than two, as the previous release contained.

The title of Track 1, "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" is a quote from "Love Don't Roam", a song composed for the 2006 Christmas special "The Runaway Bride" and included on the first soundtrack. The Album's first track - "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" - is used by Arsenal F.C. after the conclusion of Requiem For A Tower by Clint Mansell as both Arsenal F.C. and the opposition team lines up in the tunnel before entering the pitch at the Emirates Stadium. The musical sting at the beginning of "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" also appeared on the previous soundtrack, as part of the selection "Westminster Bridge"; it has been heard at the beginning of several episodes, including the "The Runaway Bride". Portions of the remainder of "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" have been heard in episodes from "Gridlock" onwards, most notably "42" where it is used extensively, and in the chase sequence of "The Sound of Drums". In a DVD commentary for "42", executive producer Russell T Davies mentions that the theme was "moved up" into earlier episodes than initially planned. The track is subtitled (The Trailer Music) acknowledging the use of the track in Series 3 trailers.

Returning to the soundtrack was Melanie Pappenheim whose vocals can be heard on track 2: Martha's Theme, track 15: The Doctor Forever and track 20: YANA (Excerpt).

This volume contains three vocal tracks ("My Angel put the Devil in Me", "The Stowaway" and "Abide With Me"), although only two of these were specifically composed for Doctor Who. "The Stowaway" appeared in the 2007 Christmas special, "Voyage of the Damned"; the full version of the song was released on SilvaScreen's MySpace page. The CD versions of "The Stowaway" and "My Angel put the Devil in Me" are both performed by the vocalist Yamit Mamo.^[3] The remaining lyrical track, the hymn "Abide With Me", is a choral arrangement originally presented at the end of the episode "Gridlock", as the Doctor tells Martha the truth about Gallifrey. It is implied that the now-free motorists are the singers.
