David Robert Michael Melding AM (born 28 August 1962) is a Welsh Conservative Party member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Welsh Conservative Party in the South Wales Central Region. He was the Deputy Presiding Officer of the National Assembly between 2011 and 2016.

Early life

Melding was born in Neath, where he attended Dwr-y-Felin Comprehensive School. He went on to study at University of Wales, Cardiff (BSc Econ in Politics), and the College of William and Mary, Virginia, USA (MA in Government).[1]

Professional career

Member, Conservative Research Department 1986-89. Co-ordinator of the Carers National Association in Wales, 1996-99. Governor of a special school. Deputy Director of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs, 1989-96.[1]

Political career

Member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Welsh Conservative Party in the South Wales Central Region since 1999.

Chair of the Standards of Conduct Committee in the First Assembly (1999-03). Chair of the Legislation Committee in the Second Assembly (2003–07). Was appointed Chair of Audit Committee in the Third Assembly (2007). On 11 July 2007 he was appointed Shadow Minister for Economic Development.
