David "Dave" Lopez is an American telecommunications executive who was the Oklahoma Secretary of Commerce under Governor of Oklahoma Mary Fallin. On January 27, 2011, Republican Governor of Oklahoma Mary Fallin named Lopez to serve as her Oklahoma Secretary of Commerce and Tourism. Lopez was appointed to serve in the dual role of both the Secretary of Commerce and Tourism as well as the Executive Director of the Department of Commerce. However, in 2013, Lopez's position was reorganized by separating Commerce agencies from Tourism agencies, retitling his position to simply "Secretary of Commerce". On November 2, 2012, Lopez resigned his position as Executive Director but retained the Cabinet Secretary office. The duties of Executive Director were then given to the former Deputy, Jonna Kerschner.[3]

Lopez resigned as Secretary of Commerce on August 26, 2013 effective August 30, 2013 after being named as the interim Superintendent of Schools for the Oklahoma City Public School District, succeeding Karl Springer.[4] In October, 2013, Fallin appointed then Oklahoma Secretary of State Larry Parman to serve as the new Secretary of Commerce as well as the Executive Director for the Department of Commerce.[5]

Biography

Lopez received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from New Mexico State University. He joined SBC Communications, eventually raising to the position of President for the Oklahoma and Texas regions. After leaving SBC Communications, he began working as President of Downtown Oklahoma City Inc, which is a non-profit corporation aimed at revitalizing Oklahoma City's downtown. He then served as President of American Fidelity Foundation, a non-profit corporation in Oklahoma City that gives grants for economic development, education, human services, and art.

Personal life

Lopez and his wife Lana live in Oklahoma City and have five children and seven grandchildren.
