History

Background

Cupcake Digital Inc. was founded in June 2012 by Brad Powers and Susan Miller.

The company’s current focus is on the production and distribution of children’s apps (applications used on mobile devices) containing interactive storybooks and games that are developed primarily for tablet and mobile platforms, including Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), Google Android, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and Amazon Kindle Fire.

In March, 2012, prior to the formal founding of the company, Cupcake Digital launched its first app, Wubbzy’s Pirate Treasure. The app was distributed on the Apple, Amazon, and Android distribution platforms. It was the recipient of the 2013 Parent’s Choice Classic Fun Stuff award.[1]

Licensed Properties

The majority of the company’s apps “transcreates” creative assets from each licensed property into “deluxe storybooks,” iLearning books, educational games, and other apps. As of the end of 2014, Cupcake Digital’s portfolio of licensed children’s properties included:

Acquisitions

In March 2013, Cupcake Digital acquired zuuka Inc.,[2] developers of the popular iStoryTime Library. With over 200 children’s e-books, the acquisition became the basis for the company’s children’s app subscription platform, and expansion into children’s e-books and video content.

In November 2014, Cupcake Digital acquired Little Bit Studio, LLC,[3] developers of the popular Bugs and Buttons[4] series of apps for children. This acquisition is the company’s first step in creating and building original properties for the consumer products market.

The company complies with industry “best practices” and Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) consumer privacy regulations.

The Federal Trade Commission has published updated privacy protections for children online (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998, or “COPPA”). The company has affirmed that it is currently in compliance with COPPA rules, which restrict the collection of personal, non-personal and analytical data from children as well as gaining parental permission.[25]
