Colby Covington (born February 22, 1988) is an American professional mixed martial artist who competes in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Background

Covington was born in Rocklin, California,[4] and moved with his family to Springfield, Oregon at the age of 11. Covington wrestled at Thurston High School, lettering all four years and winning the state championship as a senior.[5] Covington went to attend Iowa Central Community College, where he won the 165 lb national title as a true freshman. His roommate at the time was future UFC champion Jon Jones. "Off-the-mat" personal issues forced Covington to relocate back to Oregon, where he enrolled at Oregon State University.[3] Covington was highly decorated as a Beaver, becoming an All-American,[6][7] two-time Pac-10 champion,[6][7] and finishing 5th at the 2011 NCAA tournament.[8]

Mixed martial arts career

After a brief stint in the Oregon amateur MMA circuit, Covington moved to South Florida to train at American Top Team.[7] He turned professional in 2012, compiling a record of 5-0 before signing with the UFC in the summer of 2014.[9]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Covington made his promotional debut against Wang Anying on August 23, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 48.[9] He won the fight by submission due to strikes in the closing seconds of the first round.[10]

Covington faced Wagner Silva on November 8, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 56.[11] He won the fight via submission in the third round.[12]

Covington next faced Mike Pyle on May 23, 2015 at UFC 187, replacing an injured Sean Spencer.[13] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[14]

Covington faced Warlley Alves on December 12, 2015 at UFC 194.[15] He lost the fight via submission in the first round.[16]

Covington was expected to face Alex Garcia on June 18, 2016 at UFC Fight Night 89.[17] However, Garcia was pulled from the fight on June 10 for undisclosed reasons and replaced by promotional newcomer Jonathan Meunier.[18] Covington won the fight via submission in the third round.[19]

Covington next faced promotional newcomer Max Griffin on August 20, 2016 at UFC 202.[20] He won the fight via TKO in the third round.[21]

Covington is expected to face Bryan Barberena on December 17, 2016 at UFC on Fox 22.[22]
